Better late than never. E*TRADE, the online brokerage that is perhaps best known for its commercials starring infant trading whizzes, has begun offering commission free trading on a lineup of exchange-traded funds. ETFs issued by Global X, WisdomTree, and db-X (Deutsche Bank) will be eligible for commission free trading on the E*Trade platform. That lineup includes about 90 ETFs covering a wide variety of asset classes, including currencies, international bond markets, dividend-weighted indexes, and commodity-producing equities. The most popular ETFs that are now available commission free on E*Trade include:
- WisdomTree Emerging Markets Equity Income Fund (DEM)
- WisdomTree Emerging Markets Local Debt Fund (ELD)
- WisdomTree Dividend ex-Financials Fund (DTN)
Popular Global X tickers available on the E*Trade platform now include the Silver Miners ETF (SIL), Uranium ETF (URA), and Colombia ETF (GXG). The db-X lineup of ETFs includes a suite of currency-hedged products that strip out the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on international equity exposure.

Commission Free ETF Programs
E*Trade is hardly the first brokerage to offer commission free ETFs in an attempt to lure in the growing number of investors who rely primarily on the exchange-traded structure. Since Schwab offered commission free trading on its lineup of ETFs to mark its entry into the ETF industry, a number of other firms have debuted similar plans:
- TD Ameritrade: The biggest commission free ETF platform includes more than 100 products from a number of different issuers and asset classes. Let by the ultra-popular VWO, IVV, and TIP, the ETFs included in the TD program have combined assets of more than $400 billion.
- Charles Schwab: The low-cost ETF provider also gives investors who use Schwab accounts a break on commissions; all 14 Schwab ETFs are available free of fees here.
- Fidelity: Through a partnership with iShares, 30 ETFs from the largest U.S. issuer can be traded without commissions in Fidelity accounts. The most popular include EFA and EEM.
- Firstrade: This lesser-known broker offers commission-free access to ten popular ETFs: VWO, IVV, IJH, VIG, BSV, FXI, DBC, BIV, VBK, and BLV.
- Interactive Brokers: This broker offers commission free trading on all ETFs offered by Global X (about 40 different ETFs) and FactorShares (five ETFs).
- Scottrade: The 15 ETFs from FocusShares, which is owned by Scottrade, can be traded without commissions here.
- Vanguard: All of Vanguard’s 60+ ETFs can be traded without commissions in Vanguard accounts.
