Today was a peculiar day for the markets as indexes got off to a shaky start, but managed to recover their lost ground, while volatility ticked higher amidst the plethora of good news. On the home front, the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, posting a 0.05% gain on the day. Greece has reportedly reached an agreement with policymakers overseas, although the deal has not yet been officially finalized [see also February Edition Of ETF Edge Now Available]. Investors at home rejoiced over better-than-expected economic data; jobless claims came in at 358,000, beating analysts’ expectations of 370,000, while wholesale inventories also expanded by 1% after coming in flat last month. Stock markets had a whirlwind of a day as indexes fluctuated between gains and losses amidst the looming Greek debt negotiations, ultimately closing in shallow green territory. On the home front, the Nasdaq charged ahead, gaining 0.41% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average just barely pulled off a win, settling 0.04% higher on the day. Stock markets ended the day in green territory as hopes for a Greek debt-deal outweighted the cloud of uncertainty hoovering over the final agreement. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average led the way higher, gaining 0.26% on the day, while the Nasdaq lagged behind, inching higher by just 0.07%. Gains were most abundant in the utilities sector, while the conglomerates slumped in shallow red territory as the trading session drew to a close [see Five New Features On ETFdb.com]. Optimism on the home front was bolstered by better-than-expected economic data; the latest job openings figure came in at 3.4 million, a solid increase from last month’s reading of 3.1 million. Consumer credit data also helped to restore confidence in the economic recovery; the latest report showed that U.S. consumer had increased their debt by a seasonally adjusted $19.3 billion, a slight drop-off from last month’s record $20.4 billion increase. Today was one of the best trading days in recent memory. The Dow rose 1.2%, hitting its highest levels since 2008, while the Nasdaq surged 1.6% to its highest level in 11 years; the S&P 500′s return of 1.5% wasn’t too shabby either. The big day was spurned by a better than expected unemployment report for January, which showed signs of an economic turnaround, though many analysts have warned that we need several more months like this in order to classify ourselves as recovering. On the commodity side of things, gold futures were slaughtered with the price of the precious metal dropping by 1.8% as investors piled into equities. Stocks marched higher on Wednesday as investors rejoiced over encouraging fundamental economic data on all fronts. In the U.S., better-than-expected manufacturing and employment reports bolstered stocks higher; the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 1.22% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, inching higher by just 0.66%.
