Equity markets took investors for a roller-coaster ride today as selling pressures in the morning were eventually overturned by bullish fever in the afternoon. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq charged ahead, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average just barely missed the green, settling 0.05% lower as the trading session drew to a close. Domestic equity markets got off to an encouraging start, only to give into profit-taking pressures in the final hours of trading. Major indexes ended up in red territory as escalating worries that Greece would exit the euro weighted on investors’ confidence. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 Index came out on top, clinching a gain of 0.05% on the day, while the Nasdaq settled in red territory, shedding 0.29% on the day. Investors came back in a buying mood after the weekend following last week’s absolutely dismal performance on Wall Street. Major equity indexes managed to snap out of their losing streaks to kick-off the week; the Nasdaq soared ahead, gaining an impressive 2.46% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, clinching a 1.09% gain as the closing bell rang. Crude oil rallied alongside stocks today as well; futures prices for the fossil fuel gained upwards of 1% on the day, settling near $93 a barrel as the trading session drew to a close [see also Using ETFs To Measure Interest Rate Risk]. Today saw markets turn south as investors continue to lose confidence in general markets. The biggest story on the day was the relatively lackluster performance from Facebook (FB), as the social networking giant made its IPO. While a number of tech IPOs over the last few months have opened with stellar gains, FB finished the day almost entirely flat, despite trading at a volume of nearly 600 million. The S&P 500 dropped 0.7% while the Dow lost around 73 points. But no major benchmark was hit as hard as the Nasdaq, which lobbed off 1.2% [see also Updated: Which ETFs Will Own Facebook (And When)]. Today was another dismal trading day with markets selling off viciously as the session came to a close. The Dow lobbed off 156 points and the S&P 500 sank by about 1.5%. That marks 11 losing days out of the last 12 for the Dow. Benchmarks were extremely skittish today as it seems more and more likely that Greece will be exiting the euro zone, spooking many that a full-fledged global crisis is just around the corner. Tech investors were also notified that tomorrow’s Facebook IPO (FB) will be priced at $38 per share, as many debate over whether or not they will be buying in or shying away [see also Which ETFs Will Own Facebook (And When)]. The bears strolled through Wall Street yet again as looming uncertainties coupled with fresh worries from the latest Fed minutes paved the way lower for major equity benchmarks. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq led the way lower, shedding 0.68% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average held its ground best, losing just 0.26% as the closing bell rang. Greek drama is the name of the game. Selling forces prevailed for yet another day on Wall Street as uncertainty climbed following the latest decision to host another round of elections in Greece. On the home front, the S&P 500 Index led the way lower, sinking by 0.57% on the day, while the Nasdaq proved most resilient, shedding just 0.30%. Gold and oil extended their losses as well, settling near $1,545 an ounce and $93 a barrel respectively [see also How To Hedge For A Market Correction With ETFs]. Stocks on Wall Street extended their losing streak from last week as the ongoing political gridlock in Greece continues to weigh down on investors’ confidence. On the home front, profit taking pressures hit the S&P 500 Index the hardest, dragging it down by 1.11% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average fared slightly better, shedding 0.98% on the day. Markets were on a wild ride today as a number of conflicting data points pushed and pulled major equities in either direction. Eventually, the bears took over and most major benchmarks ended the week down, capping off another losing week on the street. The Dow lost 34 points and the S&P 500 surrendered 0.34% in today’s trading while the Nasdaq squeaked out a 0.01% gain. Although consumer sentiment was better than expected for the day, news of JP Morgan’s astronomical trading losses were enough to spook investors [see also 3 ETFs For A Euro Zone Double-Dip]. Today’s session was no barn-burner by any means, but at least we got to see major benchmarks finish in positive territory and snap a six day losing streak. The Dow squeezed out gains of 20 points while the S&P 500 jumped by about 0.3%. Markets were lifted upwards by better than expected jobless claims on the day, as investors hope to see hiring pick up for the month of May after a disappointing result for last month. But while stocks were able to conjure up a decent day, commodities faced harsher behavior [see also The Cheapest Actively Managed ETFs]. Unlike equity benchmarks, crude oil was unable to alleviate its own six day losing streak, as the fossil fuel finished just barely down on the day.
