April was a month of economic reporting on all sides, and the majority of the market finished the month with strong returns. Disappointing ISM and labor data was seen both early and late in the month, as April saw a slowdown in the growth of new U.S. private sector jobs. March was a month of ups and downs, with the S&P reaching record highs and the European Union scrambling to clean up after the banking crisis in Cyprus. Small businesses and retail sales enjoyed a strong month, with positive effects spilling over into other areas of the U.S. markets. February continued the bull run in the U.S. market, with reports every week showing stronger economic growth both domestically and overseas. November was a slow month for ETF growth, starting with the delayed releases of all both Pryxis and RBS funds due to Hurricane Sandy wrecking havoc on the entire Eastern shoreline. These funds did eventually make their way to market, but as the end of the month and Thanksgiving approached, the U.S. markets stayed stable and slow [for updates on all new ETFs, sign up for the free ETFdb newsletter]. October may have started off well in the markets, but after a series of poor earning reports major equity indexes went into a tail spin, landing much lower than many expected to be. Many of the new ETFs that were proposed earlier this year are now finally coming to market, offering unique and potentially profitable investment options; October saw the debut of the newest actively managed fund, as well as an interesting “core” lineup aimed towards long-term investors [for updates on all new ETFs, sign up for the free ETFdb newsletter]. After a slow summer stretch, activity picked up a bit in September as ETF issuers pushed out new products and continued to produce new ideas. Not surprisingly, many of the new ETFs now coming to market continue to be innovative, first-of-their-kind offerings; September saw the debut of the first China dividend ETF, as well as a unique “alternator” ETN that shifts its allocation across various indexes. September saw the continuation of the contraction that has hit the ETF industry in recent months. Multiple issuers shuttered or announced decisions to shutter products that have struggled to gain interest from investors. The summer months might have seen low trading volumes in the stock markets, but the ever evolving ETP industry kept investors on their toes. August alone saw the end of more than a handful of products, but with the promise of many more to come this fall. Last month saw the beginning of five new ETFs that are focused on growing consumer interests: fixed income funds, access to new emerging markets and duplicating the results of hedge funds. Each fund introduced this month took one of these concepts to a new level, following the closing of a number of different offerings. Over25 ETFs were liquidated this month, with the majority shutting down after failing to accumulate significant assets under management. July proved to be yet another eventful month as multiple ETF issuers wasted no time in rolling out over ten new products in the past several weeks. Though usually a slower season in regards to product development, this summer has had no shortage of new activity. Investors now have more options than ever as issuers continue to seek out new and innovative product offerings. Though July was another up/down month in the global stock markets, the ETP industry showed strength through its continued growth. This past month’s launches are a diversified mix of exchange-traded products including equities, fixed income and currency offerings. Among the new additions are a “Random Roger” actively-managed fund and a new Master Limited Partnership ETN. June saw yet another period of strong growth in the ETF lineup, with multiple issuers rolling out new products over the past several weeks. While the pace has certainly slowed from the winter months, there is no shortage of new activity in the space, including a number of first-to-market products that are now hitting the market. Last month saw the continuation of a trend from the first five months of the year: growth in fixed income funds. Several issuers launched new bond ETFs last month, continuing to build out that part of the product lineup. Among the new additions are a “crossover” corporate bond ETF and another emerging markets corporate bond fund.
