Visual History Of The Dow Rebalances (DIA)

Published on by on March 18, 2013 | Updated August 26, 2013

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was founded on May 26, 1896 by Charles Dow and Edward Jones. The index, the second-oldest in the United States, is designed to track the 30 largest publicly-traded firms in the states. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA, A-) from State Street is the most popular exchange-traded fund dedicated to the index, but it is not alone. Other products like Schwab‘s US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD, A) and the SPDR DJ Wilshire REIT ETF (RWR, A-) have stepped in to put their own spin on the index.

The index has seen a wide variety of firms grace its holdings, with the early 20th century dominated by industrial firms while the late 1990s were very representative of the internet bubble. Below is a visual history of the composition of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, from its inception through the most recent rebalance in 2012. Click on a button to see the components at that rebalance; new additions to the index are marked with an asterisk.
