Visual History Of The Dow Rebalances (DIA)

Published on by on March 18, 2013 | Updated August 26, 2013

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was founded on May 26, 1896 by Charles Dow and Edward Jones. The index, the second-oldest in the United States, is designed to track the 30 largest publicly-traded firms in the states. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (DIA, A-) from State Street is the most popular exchange-traded fund dedicated to the index, but it is not alone. Other products like Schwab‘s US Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD, A) and the SPDR DJ Wilshire REIT ETF (RWR, A) have stepped in to put their own spin on the index.

The index has seen a wide variety of firms grace its holdings, with the early 20th century dominated by industrial firms while the late 1990s were very representative of the internet bubble. Below is a visual history of the composition of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, from its inception through the most recent rebalance in 2012. Click on a button to see the components at that rebalance; new additions to the index are marked with an asterisk.
