Welcome to the August issue of ETF Edge! The summer season has been a busy one in the ETF world, as new products have continued to hit the market and the competitive landscape has constantly evolved. August looks to be headed for more of the same; several new ETFs are slated to begin trading and the competition for investor dollars continues to intensify. Inside this issue, we’ll take a look back at all of the big stories from the last month that dominated the headlines in the ETF world.

From an investing perspective, times remain challenging. The recovery seems to be on the verge of running out of gas, as persistently high unemployment has proven to be a much tougher hurdle to overcome than many had hoped. After taking their cues from Europe and China for much of the year, investors are now focusing more closely on the domestic economy, giving increased scrutiny to earnings reports, jobs numbers, and the latest leanings of Bernanke and company. A broad based rally to finish off the summer seems extremely unlikely, but there are nevertheless some promising corners of the market that seem to present intriguing opportunities.
