For investors looking to identify sectors of the U.S. economy that may be poised for relative outperformance, we present the ETF Database sector grid, highlighting the forward-looking price-to-earnings ratios of each of the nine sector SPDRs.
Last month, sector multiples broadly declined as weakness across equity markets sent investors to more risk-averse corners of the market. Commodity prices sank lower across the board, and likewise XLB took a hit and saw its P/E ratio decline to 13.1 from 13.8 previously. The energy sector was also amongst the worst performers as volatility in the futures market coupled with broad equity market weakness proved to be unfavorable, and XLE’s P/E ratio declined to 12.5 from 13.2 previously.
