Welcome to the September issue of ETF Edge! With the summer drawing to a close, the ETF industry continues to race ahead, and the final four months of the year promise to be busy ones. The industry continues to evolve, as new funds continue to hit the market and issuers continue to refine strategies for providing investors with exposure to all types of asset classes. Separately, competition is beginning to heat up in the ETF world, as the race to plant a flag in more targeted asset classes heats up and head-to-head competitions become more common. Inside this issue, we’ll take a closer look at an industry that has made huge strides in 2010 but still seems to have tremendous potential in the investment landscape.
From an investing perspective, optimism continues to be in short supply. It is clear that the U.S. recovery is now running on fumes, and potential catalysts for a fourth quarter rally are nowhere to be found. The number of new ETF products offering exposure to international markets highlights the extent to which investors are now looking beyond their borders for assets that offer more attractive growth potential with perhaps less risk as well. Even in this challenging environment, some bright spots have emerged: asset classes that have been weighed down by general risk aversion and bearish outlooks may thrive in the final few months of the year.
