The volatility in August caught many investors by surprise, as a turbulent month brought regular triple digit swings in the Dow and uncertainty over the ability of the U.S. economy to steer clear of another recession.
The impressive rally to close out the month–equity markets climbed close to 5% in the final four days of August–only added to the confusion.
