This ETF offers exposure to a number of different Asian economies, including developed Japan, emerging China, and the quasi-developed nations of South Korea and Taiwan. As such, ADRA may be appealing to investors who expect Asia to lead the global economy forward, accounting for greater growth than broader global equity markets. Accordingly, ADRA may fill different roles for different investors; this ETF may be used as a short-term play or as a component of a longer-term, buy-and-hold portfolio. Investors looking to focus more specifically on emerging or developed economies, however, have the ability to narrow down exposure further; GMF is effective for the former, while EPP might be useful for the latter. There are several elements of ADRD that are noteworthy. The most appealing attribute of ADRA may be the competitive expense ratio, which is well below the category average. The exposure offered, however, leaves something to be desired. Japan accounts for a significant portion of the portfolio, which may be a turn off to investors looking to concentrate exposure in emerging markets that feature greater long-term growth potential. Besides the heavy allocation to Japan, the relatively shallow portfolio results in heavy concentrations in top holdings and almost exclusive allocations to mega caps. ADRA is cheap exposure to Asian markets, but the portfolio offered up may not be optimal for certain investors; those looking to steer clear of Japan and achieve greater depth of holdings might want to take a look at AAXJ.
