This ETF is one of several options out there for accessing emerging markets stocks, an asset class that is a core holding in many long-term, buy-and-hold portfolios. What makes EMFT unique from some of the other options in the Emerging Markets Equities ETFdb Category is the depth of the portfolio--or lack thereof. EMFT holds only about 50 stocks, meaning that the portfolio consists of the largest companies from the emerging world. The portfolio will generally consist almost entirely of mega cap stocks, which can exhibit lower volatility than smaller emerging markets stocks. Compared to more broad-based emerging markets such as VWO or EEM, EMFT will be much more "top heavy" with the top few holdings accounting for substantial portions of total assets. EMFT may also feature some unique sector biases; banks and oil companies tend to be among the largest companies in many emerging markets. While those features aren't necessarily drawbacks, they could influence how this product can best be used. Those planning for a long term time horizon will probably prefer greater depth and balance of exposure, such as the portfolios offered by VWO (which has more than 500 individual holdings). So EMFT might be most useful as a tactical tool for shifting emerging markets exposure towards the larger, more stable companies in this asset class.
