This ETN is one of the more unique products currently on the market, offering investors a way to place a leveraged bet on the performance of emerging market stocks. EMLB is unique from other leveraged EM ETPs in several ways. First, this product is an ETN, meaning that investors are exposed to the credit risk of the issuing institution but will avoid any tracking error. Second, while most leveraged ETPs seek amplified results over a daily or monthly time horizon, this product seeks to deliver leveraged results over a much longer time frame: the life of the note (remember that ETNs are debt instruments, with maturity dates). So while EMLB offered 2x leverage at launch of the product, that "participation" multiple will change based on the performance of the related index (see the iPath Web site for the latest effective leverage). As such, EMLB is actually very different than most leveraged ETPs; while it still probably isn't appropriate for long-term portfolios, it won't experience the same degree of return erosion in up-and-down markets. Investors should also take note of the potential for automatic redemptions of the notes, another feature unique to EMLB and similar products.
