This global ETF invests in companies engaged in various alternative energy industries, giving investors broad exposure to clean energy industries. For investors looking to bet that alternative energy will thrive in coming years, GEX can be a nice choice; this ETF casts a wide net, including exposure to solar power, wind power, and other renewable energy sources. For those seeking more targeted exposure, there are more granular ETFs dedicated to various alternative energy sub-sectors (such as PWND and TAN). Given the somewhat targeted nature of the exposure this ETF probably won't warrant a huge allocation in any long-term portfolio, but can be useful as a complementary holding to establish a position in a strategy that generally receives little weight in broad-based funds. GEX can also be useful as a tactical tool, establishing tilts towards the alt energy sector in certain environments. The portfolio of GEX isn't too deep--there are about 30 holdings--and a few of the bigger names receive significant weightings. But that concentration isn't all that surprising, as the roster of publicly-traded alt energy companies is somewhat limited. Other options worth considering include ICLN and PUW; investors should compare expenses, depth of holdings, and type of exposure offered when picking an alternative energy fund consistent with their objectives.
