This ETF offers broad-based exposure to investment grade U.S. bonds, making GMTB a building block for any investor constructing a balanced long-term portfolio as well as a potentially attractive safe haven for investors pulling money out of equity markets. While GMTB can potentially be a one stop shop for fixed income exposure, a close look at the composition of this fund is advised. Many may find the significant allocations to MBS securities and a relatively small allocation to Treasury bonds somewhat troubling suggesting that a Treasury bond focused ETF may be a needed addition in order to balance out a portfolio's risk/return profile. Furthermore, unlike many funds in this Category, GMTB only holds 80 securities in total, hundreds less than many others in the space. Additionally, the fund's expense ratio is at the high end of the Category as well, several products exist that offer similar exposure with close to 1/3 of the cost. As a result, for investors seeking broad bond exposure GMTB is probably a fund to avoid as similar allocations can be made in a more diversified and cheaper fashion using any number of other products in the space such as the broad-based BND.
