This ETN offers exposure to an index which is comprised of a single exchange traded futures contract, except during the roll period when the index may be comprised of two futures contracts. Unlike many commodity indices which roll their exposure to the next futures contract on a monthly basis in accordance with a pre-determined schedule, the Index may roll into one of a number of futures contracts with varying expiration dates, as selected using the Barclays Capital Pure Beta Series 2 Methodology in order to reduce contango. This particular ETN invests in four different metals which are crucial to the industrial world; copper, aluminum, zinc and nickel. However, it should be noted that the fund is heavy in its exposure to copper which makes up over half of the total assets, and then aluminum, which makes up close to one-third of the total as well. As a result, the fund is likely to be heavily impacted by the return of these two metals suggesting that demand for wiring (copper) and consumer and industrial goods (aluminum) will likely move this fund more than most other trends. For investors seeking other options in the space, there are a few choices such as DBB and BDG. However these products do not try to mitigate contango in the same way that HEVY does so investors in it for the long term are probably better off sticking with this iPath fund.
