This ETF is one of many that offers a way for investors to access emerging markets; HILO is designed to offer relatively low volatility, making it a potentially interesting play for those looking to dial back overall risk while still maintaining exposure to emerging markets. Based on an index that considers both beta and correlation of individual stocks to their local equity market, HILO should offer an attractive dividend yield and low volatility compared to other emerging markets ETFs such as EEM and VWO. That feature may be attractive in down markets, but also has the potential to limit upside when emerging markets are rallying. HILO can be used in a number of different ways within a portfolio; it may be useful as a core emerging markets position, or as a satellite position along with other EM funds. Several aspects of this fund are noteworthy beyond the dividend yield weighted methodology, which should be appealing to investors looking to maximize current returns or simply to steer clear of market cap weighting methodologies. HILO doesn't include quasi-developed markets such as South Korea or Taiwan, distinguishing it from several other emerging markets products. The HILO portfolio is relatively shallow, though holdings are well balanced across the 30 or so names that make up the fund. And given the methodology employed, it shouldn't be surprising that this ETF may maintain tilts towards certain sectors from time to time, including utilities. Overall, HILO is an intriguing option among emerging markets ETFs; this fund is towards the conservative/low volatility end of the spectrum, meaning that it could be a useful tool for those looking to keep a toe in the emerging markets pool but concerned about excessive volatility.
