This ETF offers exposure to the materials sector outside the U.S., a corner of the international economy that includes companies engaged in the extraction and production of various natural resources (and therefore potentially useful as a means of establishing "indirect" commodity exposure through commodity-intensive companies). Given the sector-specific focus, IRV likely doesn't deserve a core allocation, but may be useful as a means of implementing a tactical tilt towards the materials sector, or as part of a long/short trade (e.g., long IRV, short XLB). Investors seeking more targeted exposure to companies engaged in the production of a certain type of raw material likely have a more granular ETF available to them; the Commodity Producers Equities ETFdb Category includes dozens of resource-specific funds, ranging from agribusiness to gold to timber. In terms of balance, though the underlying portfolio includes well more than 100 individual stocks, there are some significant allocations to a few of the bigger names in the fund, resulting in a somewhat top-heavy exposure. Overall, IRV can be an excellent means of establishing exposure to the materials sector while steering clear of U.S. stocks; the price tag is reasonable, and this fund offers broad-based exposure to an often volatile sector.
The adjacent table gives investors an individual Realtime Rating for IRV on several different metrics, including liquidity, expenses, performance, volatility, dividend, concentration of holdings in addition to an overall rating.
