This ETN offers exposure to lean hogs and live cattle, a corner of the commodity market that may have appeal as a hedge against inflation or tool to capitalize on short term movements related to supply disruptions. Given this narrow focus, LSTK probably won't be found in a long-term buy-and-hold portfolio; it is more useful for establishing a tactical tilt towards a narrow corner of the commodity market. Investors seeking broad agricultural exposure have a number of options available (Agricultural Commodities ETFdb Category) as do those interested in other commodities (Commodities ETFdb Category). With several livestock ETPs to choose from, a few nuances make LSTK unique. First, it should be noted that LSTK is an ETN, meaning that investors are exposed to the credit risk of the financial institution that issued the debt security, but will be able to avoid tracking error (which can have a major impact on many commodity ETFs). The ETN structure may also have some tax advantages relative to ETFs, especially for investors who establishing a longer-term position. Also noteworthy is the roll frequency of the underlying index; LSTK offers exposure to futures contracts, and as such may not correspond to movements in spot prices for the underlying resources. Unlike many commodity ETPs that roll holdings on a monthly basis, LSTK does not roll exposure on a predetermined schedule; the roll timing is based on a proprietary methodology designed to reduce the impact of contango or backwardation on returns. This feature may make LSTK more appealing to investors looking to establish a position in livestock over the long term. Those looking for a short-term trading vehicle probably will be better served by a fund like COW that focuses on shorter maturity futures contracts (UBC is another fund that might be worth a closer look).
