This ETF is tilted towards the industrials sector, focusing on an index comprised of leading cleantech firms. Given this targeted focus, PZD is probably most useful as a tool for establishing tactical tilts towards a narrow corner of the global equity market. This fund could, however, also be useful as a minor satellite holding in a longer-term, buy-and-hold portfolios. The exposure of PZD is appealing in certain respects; the modified equal weighting methodology ensures that exposure is not concentrated in a small handful of names, while the global focus delivers both U.S. and international stocks. But we question the ability of this ETF to deliver exposure to the cleantech space, as the individual components seem like a hodgepodge of miscellaneous companies that do not combine to create a compelling or consistent investment strategy. Investors seeking exposure to wind power or solar power firms would be better served by ETFs such as PWND or TAN, while those looking for broad exposure to alternative energy should check out GEX or ICLN. PZD warrants a closer look under the hood before investing, as the diverse collection of companies won't necessarily deliver the type of exposure investors may be after.
