Today was a peculiar day for the markets as indexes got off to a shaky start, but managed to recover their lost ground, while volatility ticked higher amidst the plethora of good news. On the home front, the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, posting a 0.05% gain on the day. Greece has reportedly reached an agreement with policymakers overseas, although the deal has not yet been officially finalized [see also February Edition Of ETF Edge Now Available]. Investors at home rejoiced over better-than-expected economic data; jobless claims came in at 358,000, beating analysts’ expectations of 370,000, while wholesale inventories also expanded by 1% after coming in flat last month. Thursday was a mixed day for the markets as bearish pressures in the morning were overturned thanks to positive employment data on the home front. The Nasdaq led the way higher, clinching gains of 0.81% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind in red territory, shedding 0.02%. Gold continued its ascent for the fourth consecutive day this week and futures prices for the precious yellow metal settled near $1,620 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. Selling pressures hit the street at the opening bell after Target and J.C. Penny announced mixed December same-store sales results. Euro zone drama resurfaced as France’s borrowing costs started off the year on a high note, following the first debt auction of the year. Equity markets started off the final trading week of the year on a mixed note, with many taking profits and locking in gains, while some cheered on the positive economic data at home. The holiday weekend wasn’t enough to inspire a full-scale Santa Claus rally like many had hoped ; the Nasdaq led with way higher, clinching a 0.25% gain, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average Lagged Behind, turning in a loss of 0.02% on the day. Wall Street started off another week in the dumps, as markets took a nosedive to end today’s trading session. By the time the day came to a close, the Dow had lost just over 100 points while the S&P 500 suffered losses of 1.2%. Gold experienced yet another rough day as investors have seemingly lost confidence in what was once considered one of the last safe haven investments on the market. Many feel that a flailing euro and uncertain equities means that gold may be headed for losses, with the precious metal dipping 0.2% on the day. Daily ETF Roundup: XLF Sinks On JPM Earnings, DBA Rises On Livestock Strength

American equity markets finished Thursday’s trading session mixed as a bearish report from JP Morgan dragged the Dow and S&P 500 lower. In fact, the Dow and S&P 500 both finished the day lower by about 0.3% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq, boosted in part by strength in giants such as Apple, Google, and Intel, rose about 0.6% on the day. Commodity markets were also weaker as the headline commodities of gold and oil finished the day lower with gold sinking 0.8% and oil falling by about 1.2% in the session. Beyond these products, investors saw a choppy session in the natural resource space as industrial metals sank but some softs, namely coffee, orange juice and sugar, rose higher on the session. Daily ETF Roundup: DBB Sinks On Copper’s Slide, DBA Jumps On Grains’ Surge

American equity markets experienced another choppy session as traders stayed on the sidelines ahead of the fall earnings season which unofficially began after the bell with Alcoa’s report. The Dow finished the day lower by about 0.2% while the the broader indexes managed to hold on to the positives, gaining 0.05% for the S&P 500 and 0.7% for the Nasdaq. Trading was rocky across most of the sectors but utilities and independent oil firms were big losers while giants Apple and Citigroup which rose by 3% and 5.1%, respectively, helped to turn the day around for some of the large caps in their respective sectors. Commodity trading was also shaky as oil edged up and gold fell slightly lower to put the precious metal below the $1,670/oz. mark. Daily ETF Roundup: DBA Slumps On Grain Hopes, IYT Surges On Railroad Strength

Despite the choppy trading and continued uncertainty in Europe, American stock managed to finish the day higher pretty much across the board. The Dow rose by 0.4% while the broader indexes more than doubled the 30 stock index, as the S&P 500 rose by 0.9% and the Nasdaq gained 1.5% for the day. In commodity markets, most resources finished in the green as well, as gold added about 1.3% and oil surged to just below the $90/bbl. mark on a 1.9% gain. Soft commodities, on the other hand, did see broad weakness on the session as all of the grains slumped, led lower by 3% losses in the corn and wheat markets on hopes for higher supply levels. Monday was a dismal day on Wall Street as investors prepared for the worst and ran far from equity markets after the release of S&P’s downgrade of U.S. credit quality to AA+ from its coveted AAA rating. Panic-selling caught on like wildfire and domestic equity indexes slid by as much as 6% on Monday alone, only to fluctuate wildly on Tuesday, and then slump again on Wednesday. Crude oil also fell victim to the violent sell-offs this week and futures contracts dipped as low as $75.71 a barrel on Tuesday, managing to work their way higher above the $80 mark by the end of Wednesday.
