USCF Debuts Agriculture ETF (USAG)

United States Commodity Funds rolled out another addition to its suite of “third generation” commodity ETPs this week, debuting a fund that will take a unique approach to delivering access to agriculture commodities. The United States Agriculture Index Fund (USAG) will implement a variation of the methodology used by USCI, dubbed the “contango killer” commodity ETF, that debuted in 2010 and has accumulated about $400 million in assets. Instead of maintaining static weights to various agricultural commodities, USAG will seek to replicate an index that shifts exposures based on current market conditions [see Free Report: Everything You Need To Know About Commodity ETFs]. ETF Insider: Euphoria Simmers After Mixed Data

Equity markets oscillated between minor gains and losses throughout most of the week as profit taking pressures were abundant after investors digested a number of mixed economic data releases. Investors were frustrated with reports from the housing market which showed that the real estate market recovery is still sluggish at best. Consumer-confidence and durable goods orders data also missed analyst expectations. Nonetheless, investors on Wall Street ended the week on a positive note after consumer sentiment and spending data both surpassed analyst expectations on Friday. ETFs have become so popular in recent years in part because of the tax efficiencies that they offer relative to traditional mutual funds. Due to the nuances of the creation / redemption mechanism, ETFs are generally able to give investors more control over their tax situation–instead of pinning them with capital gains obligations due to the activities of other investors. Unfortunately, however, the tax treatment of exchange-traded products cannot be summed up simply as being more efficient than mutual funds. There are various complexities across the different product structures that impact the effective tax liabilities that will be incurred on gains. And there are also some nuances that impact how taxes on various ETP positions must be reported that are of major importance to some financial advisors. Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Surprisingly Pops, DBA Slips Lower

Today was a peculiar day for the markets as indexes got off to a shaky start, but managed to recover their lost ground, while volatility ticked higher amidst the plethora of good news. On the home front, the Nasdaq led the way higher, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, posting a 0.05% gain on the day. Greece has reportedly reached an agreement with policymakers overseas, although the deal has not yet been officially finalized [see also February Edition Of ETF Edge Now Available]. Investors at home rejoiced over better-than-expected economic data; jobless claims came in at 358,000, beating analysts’ expectations of 370,000, while wholesale inventories also expanded by 1% after coming in flat last month. Thursday was a mixed day for the markets as bearish pressures in the morning were overturned thanks to positive employment data on the home front. The Nasdaq led the way higher, clinching gains of 0.81% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind in red territory, shedding 0.02%. Gold continued its ascent for the fourth consecutive day this week and futures prices for the precious yellow metal settled near $1,620 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. Selling pressures hit the street at the opening bell after Target and J.C. Penny announced mixed December same-store sales results. Euro zone drama resurfaced as France’s borrowing costs started off the year on a high note, following the first debt auction of the year. Wall Street started off another week in the dumps, as markets took a nosedive to end today’s trading session. By the time the day came to a close, the Dow had lost just over 100 points while the S&P 500 suffered losses of 1.2%. Gold experienced yet another rough day as investors have seemingly lost confidence in what was once considered one of the last safe haven investments on the market. Many feel that a flailing euro and uncertain equities means that gold may be headed for losses, with the precious metal dipping 0.2% on the day. Daily ETF Roundup: XLF Sinks On JPM Earnings, DBA Rises On Livestock Strength

American equity markets finished Thursday’s trading session mixed as a bearish report from JP Morgan dragged the Dow and S&P 500 lower. In fact, the Dow and S&P 500 both finished the day lower by about 0.3% while the tech-heavy Nasdaq, boosted in part by strength in giants such as Apple, Google, and Intel, rose about 0.6% on the day. Commodity markets were also weaker as the headline commodities of gold and oil finished the day lower with gold sinking 0.8% and oil falling by about 1.2% in the session. Beyond these products, investors saw a choppy session in the natural resource space as industrial metals sank but some softs, namely coffee, orange juice and sugar, rose higher on the session.
