Daily ETF Roundup: DBB Gains On Data, UNG Sinks On Supply

Equities held onto gains throughout Thursday’s trading session despite a cornucopia of mixed economic data releases on the home front. The Nasdaq continued its rise into multi-year highs territory, gaining 0.74% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, inching higher by only 0.22%. Gold prices bounced back slightly following yesterday’s brutal sell-off; futures prices for the precious yellow metal settled near $1,720 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. The worse-than-expected news included slight decreases in ISM manufacturing data and construction spending. Investors instead focused on the positives; jobless claims came in at 351,000 versus the previous figure of 353,000, while consumer spending increased by 0.2% versus last month’s flat reading. Crude oil prices rallied alongside bullish momentum on Wall Street; futures prices for the fossil fuel hit a multi-month high of $110.55 a barrel, settling just below the $109 level as the closing bell [...]

Tuesday was filled with all sorts of good, bad, and ugly news. At home, investors digested a solid earnings report from Wells Fargo, although Citigroup’s quarterly performance came in below expectations, painting a gloomier outlook for the financials sector as a whole. News from overseas was mixed as well; China posted better-than-expected GDP results while Standard & Poor’s cut the credit rating of the European Financial Stability Facility, the region’s bailout fund [see ETF Insider: Euro Woes Weigh On Earnings]. The latest Empire State Factory Index helped to propel equities higher as investors on Wall Street rejoiced over better-than-expected data. New York’s manufacturing index came in at 13.5, blowing past analyst estimates of 11.3, and surpassing last month’s reading of 8.2. Earnings season is officially underway and U.S. stocks have started off the ceremonies on a fairly strong note. Equity indexes broadly climbed higher as investors rejoiced over better-than-expected earnings results from Alcoa; the Nasdaq led the way higher on the home front, clinching gains of 0.97%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, gaining 0.56% on the day. Today left investors with little information to chew on going into the weekend. The past week has been dominated by European woes as well as speculation over the US. The Congress “Super Committee” has until Wednesday to pass and important budget deficit plan that will aim to trim $1.2 trillion. So far, it would seem that negotiations have gone nowhere and will likely go down to the wire. The last time negotiations nearly ran out of time equities saw harsh losses on multiple days as we endured one of the most volatile months in recent memory. Next week will feature a heavy focus on these important delegations despite the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday [see also Ten ETFs No One Is Thankful For]. Markets finished relatively flat on the day. The bulls came rushing back last week and equity indexes soared, bolstered by solid corporate earnings at home coupled with encouraging developments in the Euro zone. Investors were more than cheerful to see EU leaders take the first steps towards negotiating on a viable “rescue plan” to ensure stability in the financially fragile currency bloc. Domestic equity indexes started the week off with fresh multi-month highs as investor optimism from last week carried over. Stock markets were quick to give up gains on Tuesday however, after disappointing corporate earnings results weighted down on investor confidence, while continuing Euro zone debt woes didn’t do much to remedy the situation. ETF Insider: Bulls In Drivers Seat

Domestic equity equity indexes struggled near technical resistance levels all of last week, however, the bulls prevailed on Friday. The S&P 500 Index opened and closes every single day above the key resistance level at 1,200; quite a technical feat, given that it failed to break this this level three times in the past three months. Stocks markets are not out of the woods yet by any means as many hurdles remain. Until the Euro zone debt drama is answered and lawmakers present a comprehensive plan we anticipate for volatility to remain lurking in the background. Gold remains range-bound and the precious metal flirted with support at the $1,600 an ounce level last week, and held as anticipated. Daily ETF Roundup: DBB Continues Slide On Copper Weakness, IYT Jumps On UNP Earnings

American equity markets experienced another choppy session on Thursday as France and Germany announced that a second summit would take place next week, suggesting that a resolution to the crisis would not come this weekend. Nevertheless, both the Dow and the S&P 500 managed to rise modestly on the day as the indexes gained, respectively, 0.3% and 0.5% on the session. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, however, wasn’t as fortunate as the index fell by about 0.2% to close just under the 2,600 level. Meanwhile, commodity markets continued to slide on the day as gold fell by about $25/oz. and oil slid by close to 0.2% to fall just below $86/bbl. American stocks slipped in Wednesday trading as disappointing earnings and more concerns over Europe plagued the markets once again. The Dow fell by about 0.6% on the day while the broader indexes saw more significant losses as the S&P 500 fell by 1.3% and the Nasdaq sank by 2% in the session. Banks were again a big loser on the day while tech was extremely mixed as INTC rose more than 3.5% but Apple sank back by nearly 5.6% on a rare earnings miss. Commodity markets continued to see signs of weakness as well, as gold slipped by about $10/oz. to $1,643 while oil, thanks to a late session slump, fell by about 2.5% on the day. American equity markets experienced another choppy session as traders stayed on the sidelines ahead of the fall earnings season which unofficially began after the bell with Alcoa’s report. The Dow finished the day lower by about 0.2% while the the broader indexes managed to hold on to the positives, gaining 0.05% for the S&P 500 and 0.7% for the Nasdaq. Trading was rocky across most of the sectors but utilities and independent oil firms were big losers while giants Apple and Citigroup which rose by 3% and 5.1%, respectively, helped to turn the day around for some of the large caps in their respective sectors. Commodity trading was also shaky as oil edged up and gold fell slightly lower to put the precious metal below the $1,670/oz. mark.
