Precious Metals ETFs: Finding The Best Fit

ETFs have emerged as popular tools for establishing exposure to a wide variety of asset classes, ranging from U.S. Treasuries to Vietnamese equities. But few corners of the exchange-traded product world have seen more explosive growth in recent years than precious metals, as investors have embraced these vehicles as the most efficient way to access assets that have turned in some monster performance numbers in recent years. The 21 ETFs in the Precious Metals ETFdb Category have more than $83 billion in aggregate assets, representing about 8% of the total ETP industry. That’s a massive total for an asset class that generally accounts for a relatively minor portion of long-term portfolios, reflecting the appeal of the low maintenance and low fees offered by the exchange-traded structure. ETFS Rolls Out Physical Precious Metals Basket ETF (GLTR)

ETF Securities, the European ETF giant that has now accumulated more than $2 billion in U.S. ETF assets, announced the latest addition to its product line on Friday. The ETFS Physical Precious Metal Basket Shares (GLTR) will be the first U.S.-based, physically backed precious metal basket ETP. GLTR (pronounced “glitter”) will hold gold, silver, platinum and palladium in fixed weights: 0.03 ounces of gold, 1.1 ounces of silver, 0.004 ounces of platinum, and 0.006 ounces of palladium. At current market prices, that means that the exposure will be tilted most heavily towards gold and silver,with smaller allocations to the other two precious metals [see Guide To Platinum ETFs]. The pace of new fund launches may have slowed in the ETF industry in recent weeks, but there’s no shortage of behind-the-scenes activity filling the product pipeline with more intriguing ideas. Continuing the trend of innovation in the ETF space, most of the recent filings outline unique products not currently available in ETF form, and most of these more targeted ideas are coming from the relatively small players.
