As we put the finishing touches on 2010, the year has shaped up to be one of the most eventful in recent memory for global markets as a number of important events impacted the world economy. Among the events that dominated financial headlines this year were an (ongoing) sovereign debt crisis, the flash crash, a violent volcanic eruption that grounded air traffic for some time in Europe, a major oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and another wave of quantitative easing aimed to get the U.S. back on track. One of the recurring investment themes over the last several months has been the seemingly unstoppable climb of gold. As the U.S. dollar has encountered weakness driven by worries over inflation and deteriorating credit quality, investors have embraced hard currencies as a hedge against the greenback, sending prices of gold bullion skyrocketing. With consumer confidence plunging and governments around the world racking up seemingly unpayable bills, many investors have sought refuge outside of fiat currencies in order to help protect some of their assets from the ravages of inflation which is sure to come eventually. Almost by default, investors have piled into gold which has seen its price soar to $1250/oz. before dropping back to the $1160/oz. level it is at currently. Expense Ratio Increases Coming For PowerShares DB ETFs

Last week, Deutsche Bank announced that it will increase the fees of seven PowerShares exchange-traded funds, citing “increased costs of managing the Funds due to changing regulatory requirements.” The changes will be effective beginning January 4, and will affect five commodity funds and two currency products. ETF Securities Enters U.S. Market With Silver Fund

One of Europe’s most prominent ETF sponsors has jumped across the pond, making its initial foray into the U.S. markets. ETF Securities (ETFS), which has about $12 billion invested in more than 130 products worldwide, launched the ETFS Silver Trust (SIVR) on Friday. The new fund will trade on the NYSE Arca Exchange, and has an initial expense ratio of 0.30% (the expense ratio will be capped at 0.45% after July 24, 2010). ETFS has a history of innovations in the ETF industry. The company, led by chairman Graham Tuckwell, developed the world’s first gold exchange-traded product in Australia and London and launched the first crude oil ETP in 2005.
