Friday was the only day during which the Dow Jones Industrial Average did not swing by more than 400 points, managing to regain some of the losses on Thursday and Friday and end the week lower by less than 2%. Amidst all of the uncertainty, gold made yet another run higher and futures prices for the hot yellow metal hit record highs, soaring to $1,817 an ounce on Wednesday evening. Weekly Outlook The coming week is sparse with major economic data releases, although investors will have a plateful of inflation data to digest as CPI data for the United Kingdom, Canada, and U.S. is slated come out. Gold emerged as the strongest asset class, while crude oil futures fluctuated wildly much like equity markets across the globe. Earnings season officially starts this week and we are cautiously optimistic that companies will surpass market expectations, although a strengthening dollar could create headwinds. Our trade recommendations for this week are geared towards international exposure and one of our picks is very appealing from both a technical and fundamental perspective, making it a potentially attractive tactical tool for traders. Weekly Outlook The coming week will be anything but sparse of headlines as investors keep a close eye on the markets once Alcoa Inc. kicks off earnings season after the market closes on Monday. Surprisingly enough, amidst all the chaos even gold failed to climb much higher and the precious metal closed just above $1,540 for the week. Volatility in the energy market remains abundant as crude oil futures wildly fluctuated between $98 and $103 a barrel, managing to close just above the $100 level by the end of the trading week. Silver failed to regain the $40 level and futures contracts sank lower by about $2 throughout the week, closing at around $36.28 an ounce. As expected, the U.S. dollar continued to depreciate and we are cautiously holding our ground in anticipation of an equity-market rebound in the coming days.
The attention of investors shifted from the Middle East to Japan late last week, as the natural devastation caused by a massive earthquake trumped the manmade chaos that has been playing out in Libya, Saudi Arabia, and elsewhere in the oil-rich region. With rescue efforts intensifying in the north of Japan after a magnitude 8.9 quake and resulting tsunami, a potential nuclear crisis has emerged as another threat that could impact the entire country. The death toll had climbed to nearly 1,600 on Sunday, but by some estimates that figure will reach as high as 10,000 as rescue efforts continue. Assessing the economic impact remains challenging as details continue to emerge, though investors have been selling off Japanese stocks since the quake hit and are expected to continue to do so when trading resumes on Monday.
