Wall Street was fairly tame these last few trading days of the year as light volume trading and an uncertain economic backdrop gave way to a less-than-spectacular finale to one of the most volatile years in financial history. Amongst the major domestic equity indexes, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was the only one to finish 2011 in positive territory; both the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq posted minor losses on the year. Developed and emerging market equity indexes have endured a tougher year as risk-aversion has played a key role in funneling capital towards “safer” U.S. stocks. Despite recent headwinds, gold still came out on top in the end, clinching gains of 10% amidst a volatile trading year abundant with uncertainty. New Zealand ETF: Post-Quake Opportunity?

Last month a massive earthquake struck the New Zealand city of Christchurch on the country’s south island, killing more than 160 people and causing widespread destruction. The country’s equity markets took a beating in the wake of the natural disaster, plummeting as concerns spread that the quake would grind an already fragile recovery to a halt. According to government estimates, the clean-up could cost as much as NZ$ 15 billion, considerably more than the costs associated with a September tremor because the more recent disaster hit the city’s central business district. The Treasury department estimated that economic growth in New Zealand would be 1.5 percentage points lower in 2011 as a result of the quake, a significant decline for an economy that is in danger of entering its second recession in as many years. Global X Debuts Argentina ETF (ARGT)

Global X announced today the launch of the first pure play Argentina ETF, bringing to market another option for accessing South America. The Global X FTSE Argentina 20 ETF (ARGT) will seek to replicate the FTSE Argentina 20 Index, a benchmark that includes the top 20 companies within the investable universe of Argentina-domiciled companies or companies that have substantial revenues or assets in Argentina. “ARGT provides a relatively cost effective way to access the second largest economy in South America, a glaring hole in the existing ETF offerings,” said Bruno del Ama, chief executive officer of Global X Funds. ETF First ARGT is the first ETF to offer pure play exposure to Argentinian equities, and continues a trend of expanding options for investing in South America beyond Brazil. Global X Launches Andean ETF (AND)

Global X, one of the fastest-growing ETF issuers, continues to build out the emerging markets portion of its lineup. The company announced today the launch of the Global X FTSE Andean 40 ETF (AND), linked to an index that tracks the performance of the 40 largest companies in Chile, Colombia, and Peru. For many investors seeking exposure to South America, Brazilian stocks are the default choice. Of the 14 ETFs in the Latin America Equities ETFdb Category, half are pure play Brazilian funds and these seven ETFs account for close to 70% of the aggregate assets in the category. Even broad-based Latin American ETFs have a heavy tilt towards Brazil; the iShares S&P Latin America Index Fund (ILF) allocates almost 60% of its assets to Brazilian stocks. One of the biggest stories of 2010 was the beginning of a currency war in which nations fought to maintain export competitiveness at all costs. Usually the preferred strategy of central bankers around the world has been to avoid the weakness in the dollar and ensuing strength in their own nation’s currency by buying up dollars and thereby making their exchange rate more favorable to exporting firms. This tactic has been especially popular in South America where a number of surging nations, including Colombia and Brazil, have sought to maintain export competitiveness by selling their home currency on the open market. Supply Issues, Hoarding Report Send Copper ETFs Soaring

With the finish line in sight, 2010 has been a very interesting year for commodity investors; a number of products hit multi-year or all time record highs thanks to a weaker dollar, strong emerging market and supply issues across much of the globe. Most of the supply issues that have impacted commodity markets have been beyond human control, such as inclement weather destroying crops or natural disasters impacting productivity in commodity producing regions. However, as we have seen in recent weeks, supply issues can also be a direct result of human activity, and can often have just as big of an impact on commodity prices as ‘Acts of God’. In the wake of the latest global recession, it is the emerging markets of the world that have emerged as the clear drivers of global growth. As a surging consumer segment propels China and India forward, resource-rich Latin America is well positioned to benefit from increased global demand for raw materials–particularly as the U.S. dollar tumbles against most of its primary rivals. When seeking out exposure to emerging markets, investors tend to gravitate towards the superstar economies of India and China, two markets that are expanding at mind-boggling rates as cities swell and the middle class becomes wealthier. But Latin America has been another critical driver of global GDP growth in recent years, as the resource-rich continent has strengthened relationships with Asian members of the BRIC bloc and become a key supplier of raw materials to the East. Historically, exposure to Latin America has essentially meant exposure to Brazil.
