The first half of 2010 is officially in the books, but few of the questions on investors’ minds at the start of the year have been answered. When 2009 drew to a close, few expected the remarkable rally to continue into the new year. The consensus was that the easy gains had been made since the bear market lows last March, and that markets would demand more concrete evidence of improving economic fundamentals if the bull run were to continue. The first six months of the year have given investors several reasons to be optimistic; the emerging markets of the world continue to expand at impressive rates, while many advanced economies–including some of those hit hardest by the recent downturn–have halted contraction and begun growing again. Factories are coming back on line, and demand for raw materials has jumped considerably from 2009 lows. Recent years have seen the price of crude oil skyrocket to $150 before plummeting to $30, taking the profitability and outlook for an entire industry along for the ride. It also signals that the summer driving season is quickly approaching, and kicks off a period of time when oil prices are closely scrutinized. Last year saw below average oil demand as consumers tightened their budgets in the midst of a still uncertain economic environment. With a recovery now well underway, estimates for the upcoming vacation season have been all over the board; some analysts expect a surge from consumers while others anticipate another year of conservative budgeting and relatively empty freeways. On Tuesday, the Paris-based International Energy Agency warned that rising oil prices could hinder recovery efforts in developed nations. The IEA also raised its 2010 global oil demand forecast by about 30,000 barrels a day, citing increased consumption primarily in China and Saudi Arabia.
After surging from about $35 per barrel at the end of 2008 to $70 at the halfway point of 2009, crude oil traded within a relatively tight range of $70 and $80 for the last eight months. But many analysts have become bullish on oil prices in recent weeks, anticipating a rally spurred by seasonal factors, strong demand from emerging markets, and an uptick in manufacturing and factory activity in the U.S. Oil prices cracked through the $80 level on Monday, but that threshold has proven to be a difficult resistance level, and prices retreated to finish below $79. Crude once again teased the $80 mark on Tuesday, crossing over during morning trading. Some analysts who correctly called the breach of the $80 level anticipate crude prices going considerably higher, predicting prices of $100 per barrel by the summer.
The first six weeks of 2010 have been a bit on the tumultuous side, as equity markets that came flying out of the gate have done a complete reversal, heading lower and erasing large chunks of the gains recorded in 2009. While the rocky start has been unnerving for investors anxious over the possibility of a double dip recession, others have found a silver lining in the recent pullback, as some big losses have created attractive entrance points in sectors that now appear to be bargains. The energy sector sector has been one of the hardest hit in recent weeks, as disappointing earnings reports and concerns over job growth have spooked investors. Unexpected increases in oil inventories and a surprisingly strong dollar have also weighed on the sector in the early part of the year.
Emerging markets ETFs represent the crossroads of two of the hottest investment trends of recent years. As the U.S., Japan, and developed European economies struggled to pull out of recessions and avoid a double dip, the world’s emerging economies raced ahead, led by the BRIC bloc of nations. According to the International Monetary Fund, the economies of China and India are expected to increase by 10.0% and 7.7% in 2010, compared to 2.7% for the U.S. and 2.1% for developed economies in aggregate. ETFs have also seen their popularity surge. More than 100 new funds were launched in 2009, bringing the total above 900. ETFs saw almost $120 billion in cash flows as investors continue to embrace the exchange-traded structure in favor of traditional mutual funds. So it is not surprising that ETF options for gaining exposure to emerging markets have begun to multiply, with new innovations offering investors more [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Emerging Global Splits Shares On Four Emerging Markets ETFs

Why You Need An Emerging Market ETF

First Emerging Markets Financials ETF Launches

June ETF Roundup: Launches, Filings, and Closures

EGShares Launches Suite Of Emerging Market Sector ETFs

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?" The innovation that has made ETFs a popular alternative to mutual funds seems ready to continue through2010. Based on discussions with industry executives and others covering the industry, it seems like a safe bet that 2010 will shatter existing records for new ETF launches.
