With single-country ETFs dedicated to dozens of developed and emerging markets, accessing the major (and not-so-major) stock markets around the globe has never been easier. When evaluating international equity ETFs–as with all ETFs–it is important to take a look under the hood and fully understand what the portfolio includes. Market activity this past week was all sorts of absurd; equity indexes fluctuated wildly between huge gains one day and devastating losses the next. Investors are still visibly shaken from the debt ceiling drama of last week coupled with S&P’s downgrade of U.S. credit quality, which triggered a brutal sell off on Monday to start the week. Fear in the markets continues to pave the way higher for gold and the precious metal yet again soared to new all-time-highs, hitting $1,817 an ounce on Wednesday evening.
Wall Street plunged into the abyss last week as investors prepared for the worst after the ECB and Bank of Japan intervened in the markets, sending widespread waves of fear, and inducing one of the worst sell-offs that the market has seen since the dismal days of 2008. Domestic equity indexes fell over 4% on Thursday alone, and even safe havens like gold tanked lower as investors took profits from virtually every corner of the market, except U.S. Treasuries. Gold finished the week higher closing near $1,665 an ounce, while crude oil fell lower all week, closing just above $87 a barrel on Friday. Weekly Outlook The coming week is sparse with economic data releases on all fronts. At home, investors will look forward to retail sales and consumer confidence on Friday. News from overseas will be very light as well, with a Bank of England inflation report and Australian [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: Volatility Is Still Lurking

ETF Insider: Expect More Volatility

ETF Insider: Mr. Market’s Wild Ride

Warning: Use Caution When Investing In Currency ETFs Of Commodity Dependent Nations

ETF Insider: Beware Of Bargain Shopping

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
This past week was another wild one for markets as a number of earnings reports combined with debt crises to create a very choppy couple of days. While worries over a debt deal in the U.S. and concerns over a European debt contagion may have weighed on markets, most equities managed to finish the week higher for the most part, boosted by extremely solid performances in Tuesday and Thursday trading. Tech earnings were especially strong as robust figures from IBM and unsurprisingly, Apple, helped to carry sentiment for this important corner of the market. Additionally, the transports, which many look to for strength coming out of a weak patch, also posted strong results as both CSX and Union Pacific beat estimates on higher shipping volume and price increases. Broad-based funds such as VWO or EEM are still down for the year while ETFs tracking important emerging nations such as China and India are seeing even stiffer losses in the period. One especially tumultuous market has been in Peru, the mountainous South American nation that has seen the value of its exports experience extreme levels of volatility and a tumultuous political landscape throw markets into turmoil. Earlier this year, Ollanta Humala beat Keiko Fujimori in a close race for the Peruvian presidency, winning by about 3% in a run-off election. Markets initially sold-off heavily on the news of Humala’s election over what was seen by many as the more pro-business candidate in Fujimori. It didn’t help that many thought that Humala had close ties to left-wing leaders on the continent including [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

iShares Debuts Two New Emerging Markets ETFs

5 Things To Watch Out For In International Equity ETFs

Checking In: Top 5 Equity ETFs Of 2010

ETF Insider: Cold Turkey For Europe

<a href='http://etfdb.com/2011/etf-insider-will-the-supercommittee-surprise/' title='ETF Insider: Will The Supercommittee Surprise?
