iShares Debuts Two New Emerging Markets ETFs

iShares added to its already robust lineup of emerging markets this week with two new regional products designed to deliver targeted exposure to companies in the developing world. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Latin America Index Fund (EEML) will target an index consisting of stocks in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru, while the iShares MSCI EMEA Emerging Markets EMEA Index Fund (EEME) will target emerging markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Specifically, EEME will include allocations to eight markets: the Czech Republic, Egypt, Hungary, Morocco, Poland, Russia, South Africa, and Turkey. All aboard the roller coaster! Market activity this past week was all sorts of absurd; equity indexes fluctuated wildly between huge gains one day and devastating losses the next. Investors are still visibly shaken from the debt ceiling drama of last week coupled with S&P’s downgrade of U.S. credit quality, which triggered a brutal sell off on Monday to start the week. Wall Street seemingly regained its balance on Tuesday, only to sell-off in the final hours of trading after Bernanke announced the Fed’s intent to keep rates unchanged until mid-2013. Monday was a dismal day on Wall Street as investors prepared for the worst and ran far from equity markets after the release of S&P’s downgrade of U.S. credit quality to AA+ from its coveted AAA rating. Panic-selling caught on like wildfire and domestic equity indexes slid by as much as 6% on Monday alone, only to fluctuate wildly on Tuesday, and then slump again on Wednesday. Crude oil also fell victim to the violent sell-offs this week and futures contracts dipped as low as $75.71 a barrel on Tuesday, managing to work their way higher above the $80 mark by the end of Wednesday. Wall Street plunged into the abyss last week as investors prepared for the worst after the ECB and Bank of Japan intervened in the markets, sending widespread waves of fear, and inducing one of the worst sell-offs that the market has seen since the dismal days of 2008. Domestic equity indexes fell over 4% on Thursday alone, and even safe havens like gold tanked lower as investors took profits from virtually every corner of the market, except U.S. Treasuries. Gold finished the week higher closing near $1,665 an ounce, while crude oil fell lower all week, closing just above $87 a barrel on Friday. This past week was another wild one for markets as a number of earnings reports combined with debt crises to create a very choppy couple of days. While worries over a debt deal in the U.S. and concerns over a European debt contagion may have weighed on markets, most equities managed to finish the week higher for the most part, boosted by extremely solid performances in Tuesday and Thursday trading. Tech earnings were especially strong as robust figures from IBM and unsurprisingly, Apple, helped to carry sentiment for this important corner of the market. Additionally, the transports, which many look to for strength coming out of a weak patch, also posted strong results as both CSX and Union Pacific beat estimates on higher shipping volume and price increases. Emerging market investing has been extremely rocky in 2011, as fears over inflation and political issues have plagued nations around the world. Broad-based funds such as VWO or EEM are still down for the year while ETFs tracking important emerging nations such as China and India are seeing even stiffer losses in the period. One especially tumultuous market has been in Peru, the mountainous South American nation that has seen the value of its exports experience extreme levels of volatility and a tumultuous political landscape throw markets into turmoil.
