Investors were more than happy to see a big jump in consumer confidence as well as an encouraging GDP report, both of which boosted confidence in the recovery. The biggest surprise on Wall Street was Ben Bernanke’s testimony before Congress; the Fed Chairman sparked volatile trading after he gave no indication that there would be an additional round of quantitative easing like many had anticipated [see Gold Hits Resistance, Time To Worry?]. Investor worries over the debt crisis brewing overseas overshadowed positive economic data releases on the home front, including better-than-expected retail sales, new home starts, jobless claims, and industrial production. Fundamental investors are likely scratching their heads in disbelief, seeing as how domestic stocks completely ignored the good news this past week, but instead focused on the worrisome political drama plaguing the debt burdened currency bloc. Uncertainty stemming from the debt burdened currency bloc continues to dominate headlines all over the globe as investors anxiously await for EU leaders to bring forth a comprehensive plan that ensures the region won’t succumb to a potentially devastating financial crisis.
After another up-down week dominated by Euro zone debt drama, domestic equity indexes managed to clinch a gain amidst the volatility. Investor sentiment swayed wildly as the anticipation of Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi’s resignation coupled with ongoing Italian debt woes sparked sell-offs one day and rallies the next, across virtually every corner of the global equity market. Gold prices oscillated between the $1,800 and$1,750 levels, managing to settle in the upper-half of its trading range as the trading week drew to a close. Weekly Outlook The coming week will see a host of economic releases both at home and on the international front, including several key CPI releases. Stock markets will likely continue to take cues from the Euro zone as investors keep their eye on the Italian debt situation. Gold prices oscillated between the $1,800 and$1,750 levels, managing to settle in the upper-half of its trading range as the trading week drew to a close. Equity markets came under serious selling pressures after news of a Greek referendum reignited default fears. Confidence in the currency bloc quickly returned however as the Greeks rescinded their referendum and bullish investors were quick to pile into equity markets following the sell-off the day before. The European Central Bank interest rate cut further bolstered markets higher as investors were happy to see the ECB taking preemptive measures to ensure financial stability in the debt burdened region. Gold worked its way higher amidst the continuing uncertainty, and the precious metal closed right around $1,760 an ounce for the week. The week opened up on a dismal note as the news came that a Greek referendum was in place in regards to the planned bailout package. Equities tanked for the following two days, only to recover on the Fed’s comments, or lack thereof mid-way through the week. Ben Bernanke addressed the nation on Wednesday and made no further mention on QE, prompting a massive buy as investors felt that the Fed was finally comfortable with how the economy was behaving. Thursday prompted another strong day as Greece nixed the referendum and accepted the bailout package that was originally planned. Now that the European turmoil is out of the limelight, at least for the time being, all eyes will turn to the U.S. economy, and our looming budget deficit that is far from solved [see also ETF [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

101 ETF Lessons Every Financial Advisor Should Learn

Daily ETF Roundup: UNG Pops Ahead Of Inventory Report, EWY Falls On Profit Taking

Daily ETF Roundup: UNG Jumps, VXX Falls

Daily ETF Roundup: UNG Spikes Higher, GDX Sinks With Gold

ETF Insider: Cautiously Bullish At Home

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
