Stock markets enjoyed yet another day in green territory as investors rejoiced over encouraging economic data on the home front. The latest jobless claims report gave the bulls a reason to rally after the figure came in better-than-expected; the number of people who filed for unemployment benefits fell to 358,000, versus the expected 370,000. News from the Euro zone also bolstered confidence as Greek leaders were able to finally strike a deal and secure the necessary international rescue funds [see also Doomsday Special: 7 Hard Asset Investments You Can Hold In Your Hand]. With good news on the horizon, investors will likely remain focused on the currency bloc as German inflation data is slated to come out later today. As most investors are painfully aware at this point, Europe is not in the best of fiscal shape at present. The continent is in the midst of a prolonged debt crisis that is now threatening the continued existence of the euro, and has transformed the region into a form of portfolio Kryptonite; most investors won’t go anywhere near it. Much of the attention has focused on the handful of countries that maintain massive debt burdens that continue to grow, such as Ireland, Spain, and Italy. Last year was dominated by drama from the Euro zone and the constant worry as to whether or not the currency bloc would be able to keep afloat during tough times. With a number of debt crises, rioting, and threats to leave the currency altogether, this group of countries has certainly been under a fair amount of scrutiny over the past few months. But at the head of it all has been Germany, not because they are worse-off, but because they are the powerhouse economy of the region, and are expected to lead the way during times of turmoil. As such, economic data from the Germans seems to take a heavier weight than from any other country, making this week especially important for this country. Equity markets hit the ground running last week as investors came back from the holiday weekend with a fairly optimistic outlook for 2012. U.S. stocks started off the year with a solid rally as investors’ confidence was bolstered by multiple better-than-expected economic data reports; consistent improvements in the housing market coupled with a downtick in the unemployment rate were enough to reignite bullish momentum on Wall Street. Equity markets snapped back and recovered losses from yesterday as investors were in a cheerful buying mood following better-than-expected housing data on the home front. Wall Street started and ended the day in green territory with industrial stocks leading the way higher followed closely by financials, while utilities lagged behind as investors increased their risk appetite. Gold sank lower amidst the broad market rally, marking the third consecutive day of losses for the week [see Are Gold ETFs The Best Defense Against Euro Drama?]. Prices for the precious yellow metal dipped as low as $1,523 an ounce, although the price inched back up near the $1,550 level as the trading sessions drew to a close. Investors came back to the equity markets on Monday after French and German policymakers voiced their support to come up with a viable plan for restoring stability in the Euro zone by November. Meanwhile, on the home front, domestic equity indexes extended gains throughout the week as corporate earnings results got underway. Internet giant, Google, blew past analyst expectations, putting investors in a cheerful mood on Friday, with stocks broadly finishing higher in bright green territory for the week. Waves of optimism and improvements in investor confidence, following a better-than-expected employment report at home, helped stocks climb higher last week. Gold prices remain range-bound although the yellow metal appears to be gaining momentum above the critical $1,600 an ounce level, possibly preparing to rebound higher in the coming days.
