Wall Street started off another week in the dumps, as markets took a nosedive to end today’s trading session. By the time the day came to a close, the Dow had lost just over 100 points while the S&P 500 suffered losses of 1.2%. Gold experienced yet another rough day as investors have seemingly lost confidence in what was once considered one of the last safe haven investments on the market. Many feel that a flailing euro and uncertain equities means that gold may be headed for losses, with the precious metal dipping 0.2% on the day. Equity markets around the globe plunged lower as ongoing Euro zone debt woes continue to weigh down on investor’s confidence, while resurfacing deficit drama in the U.S. only added to the growing cloud of uncertainty. The Dow Jones Industrial Average led the way lower, plunging 2.11% on the day, while the S&P 500 was the most resilient of the domestic equity indexes, shedding 1.87%. Profit taking was abundant across every corner of the market and even gold failed to take on safe haven appeal. Futures prices for the precious yellow metal broke below the $1,700 level, settling near $1,680 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Surges On Market Panic, EWY Sinks On Recession Fears

American equity markets were crushed in Thursday’s trading session as fears of a double-dip recession hit the market hard. The Dow finished the day down just over 3.5% while the broader indexes managed to post slightly better days, losing 3.3% for the Nasdaq and 3.2% for the S&P 500. Obviously, losses were pretty bad all around, but financials and basic materials definitely stuck out on the downside, while some consumer and health care names held up better than most but were still down at least 2% across the board. In commodity markets, it was a sea of red as investors scrambled for dollars and jumped out of risky commodities in droves. Gold fell by close to $70/oz., down below the $1,740 mark, while oil plunged, sinking by almost 6.5% or close to $5.60/bbl. Job creation–or the lack thereof–has taken center stage throughout much of the developed world, emerging as one of the most substantial hurdles to economic growth and potential catalysts of a double dip recession. The jobs situation in the U.S. is shaping up to be the central issue in the next presidential election, sticking out as a critical failure of the current administration and hot topic in recent debates. The stubbornly high unemployment rate in the U.S. is hardly abnormal in the current environment, especially among developed markets. In Spain more than 21% of the labor force is unemployed, and the youth unemployment rate has been reported to be close to twice that level. Greece and Ireland are among the other euro zone members that have seen unemployment rates skyrocket over the last couple of years, depressing equity markets and battering consumer confidence. Daily ETF Roundup: VXX Sinks On Market Optimism, EWY Rises On Demand For Risky Assets

Markets ended a four week losing streak as Bernanke’s speech at Jackson Hole, Wyoming calmed investor fears and sent many rushing into equities. Although the Chairman didn’t announce further easing measures, he did note that the FOMC would consider all the options at a two day meeting of the board in September. Thanks to hopes that maybe the economy wasn’t as bad as initially thought, the Dow gained 1.2%, the S&P 500 rose by 1.5%, and the Nasdaq jumped by just under 2.5% for the session. Meanwhile, in commodity markets, oil trended higher on hopes of more economic acitivity while gold surged, nearly erasing its swoon from earlier in the week as the yellow metal rose to $1,823/oz., a gain of 3.4% for the day. Daily ETF Roundup: GDX Surges On Gold’s Strength, EWY Sinks On Risk Aversion

American markets were rangebound for much of the day until shortly before the close when Moody’s downgraded Ireland to ‘junk‘ sending equities plunging to finish Tuesday trading. The Dow and the Nasdaq led on the downside as the DJIA fell by 0.5% and the Nasdaq sank by 0.7% while the broader S&P 500 managed to lose a little less, sinking by 0.4% in comparison. Commodity markets, on the other hand, rose pretty much across the board led by a 1.3% gain in gold and a 1.7% surge in oil. Grains also finished the day sharply higher as both corn and wheat gained more than 4% while sugar led the way on the upside, adding 5.4% to its price. Daily ETF Roundup: UNG Recovers On Weather Outlook, EWY Tumbles On Rate Hike

American stock markets slumped again in Friday trading, marking the sixth straight week of losses for the Dow, the longest weekly streak in nine years. The 30 stock benchmark finished the day down 172 points while the broader indexes suffered similar losses as well, as the S&P 500 fell by 1.4% and the Nasdaq slid by 1.5% on the day. Unsurprisingly, oil was also down heavily on the day as WTI crude fell nearly three dollars a barrel to finish the day close to the $99 mark. Gold also declined on the day as the yellow metal fell by $10 an ounce, or roughly 0.6% in the session. Stock markets carried their momentum from Wednesday trading into today’s session as all of the major benchmarks managed to finish in the green once again, thanks to strength from the tech sector. The Dow gained just 0.1%, and was largely outshadowed by the 0.4% gain in the S&P 500 and the 0.8% jump in the tech-heavy Nasdaq which soared thanks to a 2.1% gain from Microsoft. Commodities, however, were weaker on the day as a jobless claims number that hit 424k left some lingering concerns over demand, helping to send oil lower by close to 1.1% in Thursday trading. Other commodities, including gold and silver also experienced some selling as investors bought up U.S. Treasury bonds instead as both the two and ten year T-Bonds saw yields fall again today. U.S. equity markets sank across the board as fears over the Euro zone and debt in Spain and Italy led to a broad sell off. The Dow finished the day down 131 points while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq slumped by 1.2% and 1.6%, respectively, as a 3.2% loss from tech giant Oracle pushed the Nasdaq to the biggest loss of the three main benchmarks. Meanwhile, commodities were mixed but trended to the downside as many traders scooped up U.S. dollars leaving most of the soft and industrial commodities no where to go but down. Gold rose by $8/oz. while silver was flat, although the more industrial copper fell by close to 3.5% on the day. U.S. equities were fairly flat on Wednesday but managed to post a respectable gain for the day after lunchtime following the FOMC meeting. Fed officials were divided on when and just how aggressively to start tightening monetary policy, nonetheless the FOMC was unanimous in its decision to complete its $600 billion bond-buying program in June as planned and to hold rates steady. The U.S. dollar took a few steps back as equities regained their footing following their three-day losing streak. Gold surged higher to almost $1,500 an ounce, while silver managed to conquer the $35 level once again. Oil joined the broad rally in commodities as well, with futures prices climbing past $100 a barrel. The recent correction in domestic equities and commodities has created some interesting opportunities overseas.
