Updated: Which ETFs Will Own Facebook (And When)

Today is the day: Facebook finally becomes a public company, trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol FB. The highly anticipated ETF is expected to bring massive trading volumes, and interest should remain elevated for the next several sessions. The IPO also spurs some rebalancings and reconstitutions for ETFs that will include Facebook in their underlying portfolios. But those managers can relax on Friday, as no ETFs will include Facebook during its first few trading days. Below is an updated list of which ETFs might make big allocations to Facebook–and when the addition of the social media giant will occur. Thursday’s ETF To Watch: DJ Internet Index Fund (FDN)

After a miserable four day stretch, markets were able to open higher yesterday, as Alcoa started off earnings season with a positive report. For the next few weeks, the biggest and most important companies in the country will be shedding light on their performance in what was the best first quarter in roughly 14 years. Investors are hoping for some optimism, as the past few days have seen the bull train derailed as selling pressures have mounted. Today will see earnings from tech giant Google. The California-based firm ranks number one for both global and domestic internet traffic on Alexa, making it an enticing play. UBS Launches Risk On / Risk Off ETNs

UBS, the issuer behind one of the broadest lineups of ETNs available to U.S. investors, continued the aggressive expansion of its product lineup this week with the introduction of two unique offerings. The company rolled out a pair of blunt instruments designed to be used in high level “risk on / risk off” trades, a term that has become popular in recent months as risky assets have exhibited strong correlations with one another and so-called “safe havens” have thrived whenever uncertainty pops up. The new ETRACS Fisher Gartman Risk On On ETN (ONN) will seek to replicate the Fisher-Gartman Risk Index, a benchmark that includes long positions in various risky asset classes such as stocks and commodities and short positions in traditional safe haven investments such as sovereign bonds. Three ETFs To Watch This Week: FXI, FDN, ALUM

Although stocks started off last week on a down note thanks to growing worries over Europe, markets staged a late session rally in Tuesday trading and carried this into Wednesday and Thursday as well. These gains came on hopes for government support for euro zone banks coupled with relatively solid data from American markets to boost sentiment across a number of industries. Then, on Friday, the employment figure showed a robust increase in nonfarm payrolls, as the consensus of a 65,000 increase was crushed by an actual figure of 103,000. Furthermore, investors also saw the overall unemployment rate edge down slightly to 9.1% while the average workweek also rose, finishing up at 34.3 hours. These bullish reports suggested to many that the economy might be able to avoid a double dip recession, at least for the time being. UBS Debuts Internet IPO ETNs

UBS rolled out two new ETNs on Thursday, debuting products that offer exposure to Internet-related companies that have recently completed an initial public offering (IPO). The new ETRACS Internet IPO ETN (EIPO) is linked to the UBS Internet IPO Index, a benchmark that consists of companies that maintain operations focused on the Internet that have gone public over the last three years. The underlying portfolio includes many of the companies that have recently completed high profile IPOs, such as Pandora Media, OpenTable, and LinkedIn. In order to be included in the underlying index, companies must fall into one of three GICS Industry designations: Internet Software & Services, Internet & Catalog Retail, or Media. UBS also launched a monthly leveraged product linked to the same index, the Monthly 2xLeveraged Internet IPO (EIPL). Three ETFs To Watch This Week: FDN, FXY, PBJ

The Independence Day-shortened week was a tumultuous one for markets as stocks stayed flat for much of Tuesday and Wednesday only to soar higher in Thursday’s session on hopes of a jobs recovery. Unfortunately, this was quickly dispelled by a horrendous June jobs report which saw just 14,000 jobs created in the month, helping to push the national unemployment rate up to 9.2%. This caused stocks to sell-off heavily going into the weekend and pretty much erased any optimism that the markets had built up in the last few days. Meanwhile, overseas, Greece stayed out of the spotlight and was overshadowed by Portugal which was downgraded to junk status by Moody’s sending European markets into a tailspin as fears over a debt contagion hits markets around the periphery. Nevertheless, the ECB did manage to raise rates by 25 basis points again during their most recent policy meeting, putting the region’s benchmark rate up [...]

Internet ETFs: Five Ways To Play

In the early days of the ETF industry most of the products were broad-based equity funds that offered exposure to domestic and international stock markets. But as ETFs have gained market share and become more popular with both buy-and-holders and more active traders, products have become increasingly specialized. Since the debut of the sector SPDRs in 1998, dozens of ETFs targeting various corners of U.S. and global equity markets have been introduced; recent innovations have included small cap sector ETFs and sector-specific emerging market funds. Additions to the ETF product lineup have also been increasingly granular, going beyond the nine traditional sector allocations (ten if telecom is included) to focus on sub-industries; there are multiple ETFs offering exposure to homebuilders, biotech firms, and makers of semiconductors, just to name a few. Despite sub-par economic growth and a lack of jobs, equity markets have been surging over the past few months as investors have scooped up beaten down equities in hopes of riding the recent trend to robust gains. No more has this been true than in the technology sector where a variety of large companies seem poised for solid levels of growth on the back of increased demand in emerging markets and huge cash piles which are ready to be deployed in order to create new growth opportunities. A great example of this is with internet search giant Google (GOOG) which has begun to deploy its cash war chest in a variety of sectors of the market. The company has ramped up its spending in a variety of sectors and has now invested $715 million through the first half of the year; a 78% increase from the same period last year. [...]

Trading volumes have slumped on Wall Street in recent sessions, as most investors have waited anxiously for another earnings season to give the markets direction and offer an assessment of the recovery. This season got off to a hot start; aluminum manufacturer Alcoa and train operator CSX posted solid earnings, which helped to buoy the markets to start the week. Intel then crushed estimates, posting its highest quarterly profit in more than a decade. But despite the bullish report from the computer chip maker, markets stayed flat yesterday after the Fed trimmed its expectations for growth in the overall economy and job creation. Now all eyes will focus on Google (GOOG), which will post its second quarter earnings after the bell today.
