Domestic equity indexes snapped out of their loosing streak last week as investor confidence in the markets improved after a robust start to the holiday shopping season. The bulls charged through Wall Street on Wednesday after a global central bank initiative to lower the cost of dollar funding through swap arrangements sent a wave of buying-euphoria across equity markets. Excitement cooled off before the weekend, despite a better-than-expected U.S. unemployment report, and we expect for volatility to remain abundant this week given the unresolved Euro zone debt drama along with several key central bank meetings. Weekly Outlook The coming week will be a bit sparse on economic data releases on the home front, with central bank meetings across the globe dominating international news.
Good news from the Euro zone lifted investor’s spirits on Monday as equity markets cheered on agreement talks aimed at restoring financial stability in the debt-burdened country bloc. Earnings results from Caterpillar boosted domestic equity indexes higher after the construction giant reported a better-than-expected profit of $1.14 billion. Encouraging commentary from the company cited that low interest rates in the U.S. and Europe will help drive GDP growth going forward. Gold futures charged higher on Monday alongside equities, with prices for the precious yellow metal settling around $1,650 an ounce for the day. The Bank of Canada is announcing its interest rate decision later day, which makes the CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust (FXC) our ETF to watch [see FXC Fact Sheet].
Stock markets around the globe plunged last week following the Fed’s decision to proceed with “Operation Twist“, which sent waves of fear and panic-selling across every corner of the market. Long-term U.S. Treasury bonds were the only securities that didn’t get slaughtered last week, the S&P 500 shed more than 6% while the MSCI Emerging Markets Index lost over a whopping 11%. Not even gold could escape the chaos as the precious metal surprisingly sank over 7% during one of the “uglier” weeks on Wall Street, settling below $1,700 an ounce for the first time in a while. Investor confidence has further eroded as euro zone debt issues remain unanswered and the drama likely won’t see the happy ending that many are hoping for. Weekly Outlook The coming week is quite lacking in major economic releases on the international front, while investors at home will have a bit more data [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: Yet Another Up-Down Week

ETF Insider: Markets Bear Down

ETF Insider: Bullish Abroad, Defensive At Home

<a href='http://etfdb.com/2012/etf-insider-will-euro-woes-rain-on-the-bulls-parade/' title='ETF Insider: Will Euro Woes Rain On The Bull’s Parade?
Equity indexes crept up higher since the opening bell at the start of last week, although a grim jobs report on Friday quickly sparked a sell-off, with domestic equities broadly finishing in red territory for the week. The S&P 500 is now back below our outlined support at 1,200 and we advise stepping to the sidelines once again, although active traders can certainly take advantage of the ongoing volatility so long as they are prudent to take profits before they evaporate.
