Equity markets tumbled into red territory for another day this week as investors fretted over sour economic data on the home front along with looming debt woes in the European currency bloc. Weekly jobless claims came in worse-than-expected as 370,000 people filed for unemployment benefits versus the expected 365,000. Selling pressures prevailed across equity markets as lawmakers have yet to outline a comprehensive plan of action for restoring stability to the debt burdened currency bloc.
Investors came back in a buying mood after the weekend, although domestic equity indexes lost momentum after it was reported that Standard & Poor’s would put all 17 Euro zone member nations under credit review. Nonetheless, optimism continues to build on Wall Street as the Nasdaq gained 1.10% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, turning in a solid 0.65% gain. “There are growing hopes on both sides of the Atlantic that policy makers will play a more constructive role in helping the economy and markets after a year in which they generally did more harm than good,” wrote David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Gold prices started off the week on a fairly weak note, losing ground throughout the trading day and settling near $1,725 an ounce.
Domestic equity indexes sank desperately lower as ongoing Euro zone debt woes paved the way for rampant profit-taking across virtually every corner of the market. Investor confidence further declines as worries over the domestic supercommittee sparked waves of fear that the U.S. would soon be plagued by debt woes of its own. Bullish momentum failed to gain traction on Wall Street despite the better-than-expected new home starts data along with a positive unemployment report. Crude oil gave up much of yesterday’s stellar gains, sinking all the way down to $99 a barrel as the trading session drew to a close. Gold plunged alongside equities as futures prices for the precious yellow metal settled near $1,720 an ounce. Canada’s Consumer Price Index is slated to come out before the opening bell on Wall Street, which makes the Rydex CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust (FXC) our ETF to watch for today. The Bank of Canada is announcing its interest rate decision later day, which makes the CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust (FXC) our ETF to watch [see FXC Fact Sheet]. Analysts are expecting for the rate to remain unchanged at 1%, although investors will likely pay more attention to the forward looking economic commentary released after the interest rate [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: Stocks In Free Fall

Friday’s ETF Chart To Watch: CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust (FXC)

ETF Insider: Beware Of Bargain Shopping

Friday’s ETF Chart To Watch: CurrencyShares Canadian Dollar Trust (FXC)

ETF Insider: Will Holiday Cheer Be Enough?

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
