As earnings season comes to an end, investors will have one more week to focus on blue chip quarterly results to help guide their trades and positions. Last week saw earnings come in as a mixed bag, but that all changed on Friday when unemployment figures shattered the mold and dropped to 8.3% with 243,000 jobs added in January. But this is just the beginning; in order to prove that we are fully on the rebound, we need several more months of strong growth as well as falling unemployment. For now, however, investors are happy to finally have some good news in a relatively lackluster week. Standard & Poor’s credit downgrade of France and Austria sparked volatile trading to start the week across European and Asian markets; investors on Wall Street will have to wait until tomorrow to readjust their portfolios as U.S. equity and bond markets are closed today in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Equity markets hit the ground running last week as investors came back from the holiday weekend with a fairly optimistic outlook for 2012. U.S. stocks started off the year with a solid rally as investors’ confidence was bolstered by multiple better-than-expected economic data reports; consistent improvements in the housing market coupled with a downtick in the unemployment rate were enough to reignite bullish momentum on Wall Street. Last week shaped out to be yet another range-bound trading frenzy, dominated by fear induced selling in the early part of the week, and ending with a modest rally on Friday as investors cheered on the developments at the summit in Brussels. Gold drifted lower towards $1,700 an ounce amidst the uncertain backdrop. Stock markets endured yet another up-down day on Wednesday as investor anxiety over the upcoming European summit paved the way for range-bound trading. At home, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.34%, while the Nasdaq lagged behind, loosing 0.01% on the day. Uncertainty resurfaced after a German government official hinted that the nation would reject a proposal to combine the current and permanent Euro zone rescue funds. Gold prices appreciated as investors piled into the precious metal in anticipation of the upcoming European summit on Friday. Prices for the yellow metal settled near $1,745 an ounce as the trading session drew to a close. Investors will shift their attention to the Euro zone later today as the European Central Bank announces its decision regarding interest rates and releases forward-looking commentary about the region’s economic outlook. This past week was marked by strong markets that sent November out with a bang. The good news started with strong Black Friday sales despite worries that a slow economy would scare consumers away from using their discretionary income. Next came the news that leaders of the euro zone were hard at work for a new plan to help boost its economy; a plan that won’t involve printing money according to German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Later, it was announced that a number of central banks from all over the world collaborated to lower dollar cost funding through swap arrangements, thereby making it easier for them to borrow from each other. Finally, the week closed out with unemployment down to 8.6%, the lowest in over two years. A robust week to say the least. Wednesday’s ETF Chart To Watch: Rydex CurrencyShares Euro Currency Trust (FXE)

Equity markets finished in green territory on Tuesday as investors overseas rejoiced over optimistic-speculations that the new Italian Minister, Mario Monti, would bring order and ensure stability in the debt burdened nation. Investors had a reason to smile on the home front as well, after U.S. retail sales came in at 0.5%, surpassing analyst expectations of 0.3% growth. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein said the economy will rebound “faster than people think”. Crude oil prices surged on the day, settling just beneath the $100 level as the trading session drew to a close. Gold’s performance was rather mixed as the precious metal worked to regain much of the ground lost in overnight trading, settling near $1,780 an ounce for the day.
