After back-and-forth price action throughout most of last week, equity indexes managed to end on a high note as good news from the Greek debt swap deal restored confidence in the debt burdened currency bloc. Bullish euphoria has remained strong on Wall Street thanks to an overwhelming majority of better-than-expected economic data releases in 2012. With Euro zone woes off the table, at least for now, investors can once again turn their attention to fundamental developments on the home front. This past week featured yet another wild ride for equities as a number of factors combined to jolt markets up and down. The euro-zone saw heightened fears of default early in the week, as major indexes abroad lost more than 4% to open trading. Late in the week, one of the top ECB leaders stepped down from his position as he was opposed to the bond-buying program outlined to help dig the indebted currency bloc out of its hole. Meanwhile, in the U.S., President Barack Obama made a speech about the current unemployment rates and how he plans to solve the issue. Over the past few months, the Swiss franc has attracted considerable interest from traders and long term investors alike as concerns continue to mount over other major currencies such as the dollar and the euro. Thanks to this, the value of the franc has surged against the euro, up to all-time high levels. While many nations might welcome an increase in the value of their currencies, tiny Switzerland, which is surrounded on all sides by euro zone members, becomes increasingly uncompetitive when this happens, putting the fragile recovery taking place in the nation in jeopardy. As a result, the country’s central bank, the Swiss National Bank, has stepped up the rhetoric for interventions threatening to implement a peg of the currency against the euro for the foreseeable future. Equity markets started the week on a quiet note as investors were reluctant to jump back into the markets following the long holiday weekend. Moody’s downgrade of Portugal sent waves of selling across European equity markets, and gold jumped higher amidst all the uncertainty. The hot yellow metal was easily this week’s star-performer as it managed to start the trading week higher by about $30, and the precious metal was able to holds it’s gains and even add on more in the days following, closing around $1,544 an ounce for the week. Crude oil futures also rallied higher to just under $100 a barrel, but volatility remains extremely high in the energy market and gains quickly evaporated on Friday as futures prices dropped back to the $96.50 level. Friday’s disappointing employment report sent investors running to the safe havens and domestic equity indexes gave up much of the weeks gains [...]

ETF Insider: Gold Soars Past Equities

Investors returned quietly to Wall Street after the long holiday weekend as equity markets oscillated between small gains and losses for most of trading on Tuesday. Moody’s downgraded Portugal’s sovereign debt to junk-status, sending the euro lower in the currency markets and gold even higher. The hot yellow metal lead the way up and jumped more than $30 at the start of trading, and was able to climb back above the psychologically significant $1,500 level. Oil went along for the ride as well, gaining upwards of 2% for the day, as crude futures marched past $97 a barrel. On Wednesday domestic equity indexes were able to edge higher as investors bought in on the dip.
