October ETF Data: Surge In Inflows, Back Above $1 Trillion

ETF assets rode a surge in stock markets higher in October, as total AUM for U.S.-listed exchange-traded products climbed higher by more than 11% last month. According to the latest figures from the National Stock Exchange, ETP assets stood at $1.08 trillion at the end of October, with monthly inflows of nearly $24 billion for the month. That surge in inflows, combined with a stellar stretch for global equity markets, pushed assets back above the $1 trillion mark. After a prolonged period of poor performance, industry assets had dipped to about $973 billion at the end of the third quarter. Domestic equity funds accounted for a significant portion of total inflows, though creations in international stock funds and fixed income products also contributed to the banner month. Wall Street posted yet another up-down week of performance as domestic equity indexes fluctuated and ultimately fell victim to serious profit taking as the final trading session drew to a close. Worse-than-expected U.S. consumer confidence coupled with a decline in personal income were concerning data releases that only added to the piling uncertainty weighting down on stocks. Gold wasn’t much of a safe haven last week as the precious metal found it hard to rise back above $1,700 an ounce, and drew lower as the week went on, managing to settle just below the $1,650 mark on Friday. Friday’s ETF Chart To Watch: CurrencyShares Japanese Yen (FXY)

Stocks fell off a cliff as investors sprinted to the sidelines; the Dow Jones Industrial, S&P 500, and NASDAQ all declined upwards of 4% in Thursday trading. Nearly every corner of the market fell victim to profit-taking and rampant panic-selling as investors scrambled to close positions, anticipating that the worst has yet to come. After climbing to a record high around $1,684 an ounce in the morning, gold tanked lower all throughout the day, shedding over $30 in a matter of hours. Crude oil spiraled downward as well, with futures prices losing over 6% during the day and closing just above $86 a barrel. The Japanese yen has been on a tear in the currency markets for the past month versus the U.S. dollar as investors have been dumping the greenback and fleeing to safer corners, given the escalating levels of uncertainty surrounding the financial health and economic recovery progress [...]

Investors went along for a downhill ride last week as debt woes plagued Wall Street, sending the S&P 500 lower by nearly 4% for the week. Corporate earnings were mostly surprises to the upside, but equities failed to stage a meaningful comeback since investors were more concerned with the debt ceiling drama at home. As expected, gold continued its march higher, with futures prices hitting an all-time high of $1,637 an ounce on Friday morning. Our trade recommendations for this week include a defensive position in a domestic sector fund as well as an international fixed-income ETF, while our bullish pick stands to benefit from a rebound in foreign equities. Three ETFs To Watch This Week: FDN, FXY, PBJ

The Independence Day-shortened week was a tumultuous one for markets as stocks stayed flat for much of Tuesday and Wednesday only to soar higher in Thursday’s session on hopes of a jobs recovery. Unfortunately, this was quickly dispelled by a horrendous June jobs report which saw just 14,000 jobs created in the month, helping to push the national unemployment rate up to 9.2%. This caused stocks to sell-off heavily going into the weekend and pretty much erased any optimism that the markets had built up in the last few days. Meanwhile, overseas, Greece stayed out of the spotlight and was overshadowed by Portugal which was downgraded to junk status by Moody’s sending European markets into a tailspin as fears over a debt contagion hits markets around the periphery. Nevertheless, the ECB did manage to raise rates by 25 basis points again during their most recent policy meeting, putting the region’s benchmark rate up [...]

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan on March 11th has caused widespread destruction in the northern part of the island nation, leaving thousands dead and hundreds of thousands homeless. The quake ripped through buildings and created a tsunami that reached more than 30 feet high in some places, laying waste to coastal regions that would have otherwise been relatively unscathed by the actual quake. In recent days attention on the aftermath of the temblor has focused on the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which due to flooding and quake damage has been pushed to the brink of a full-scale meltdown that could have severe and long-lasting ramifications that reach far beyond Japan.
