Equity markets took investors for a roller-coaster ride today as selling pressures in the morning were eventually overturned by bullish fever in the afternoon. On Wall Street, the Nasdaq charged ahead, gaining 0.39% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average just barely missed the green, settling 0.05% lower as the trading session drew to a close. Investors came back in a buying mood after the weekend following last week’s absolutely dismal performance on Wall Street. Major equity indexes managed to snap out of their losing streaks to kick-off the week; the Nasdaq soared ahead, gaining an impressive 2.46% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, clinching a 1.09% gain as the closing bell rang. Crude oil rallied alongside stocks today as well; futures prices for the fossil fuel gained upwards of 1% on the day, settling near $93 a barrel as the trading session drew to a close [see also Using ETFs To Measure Interest Rate Risk]. Today was another dismal trading day with markets selling off viciously as the session came to a close. The Dow lobbed off 156 points and the S&P 500 sank by about 1.5%. That marks 11 losing days out of the last 12 for the Dow. Benchmarks were extremely skittish today as it seems more and more likely that Greece will be exiting the euro zone, spooking many that a full-fledged global crisis is just around the corner. Tech investors were also notified that tomorrow’s Facebook IPO (FB) will be priced at $38 per share, as many debate over whether or not they will be buying in or shying away [see also Which ETFs Will Own Facebook (And When)]. Greek drama is the name of the game. Selling forces prevailed for yet another day on Wall Street as uncertainty climbed following the latest decision to host another round of elections in Greece. On the home front, the S&P 500 Index led the way lower, sinking by 0.57% on the day, while the Nasdaq proved most resilient, shedding just 0.30%. Gold and oil extended their losses as well, settling near $1,545 an ounce and $93 a barrel respectively [see also How To Hedge For A Market Correction With ETFs]. Better-than-expected economic data releases on the home front went largely unnoticed given the clouds of uncertainty looming over Europe. Equity markets took cues from overseas today as Greek elections stole the headlines, forcing investors to brush aside a pair of encouraging economic data releases on the home front. Profit taking pressures took hold of the market right from the opening bell, although major indexes did manage to regain a lot of lost ground by the end of the day. Equity markets started off the week on a shaky note as investors digested a plateful of mixed earnings and economic data. Major indexes were able to regain most of the lost ground from the morning sell-off by the time the trading session drew to a close. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average came out on top, gaining 0.56% on the day, while profit taking in shares of Apple dragged the Nasdaq into red territory, ending 0.76% lower on the day [see ETF Insider: More Earnings, More Volatility]. Stocks extended their losses from yesterday as the bears stuck around on Wall Street. Selling pressures carried over as investors were quite displeased to hear from the FOMC on Tuesday that additional stimulus measures would be unlikely at this time. Profit taking continued as investors dialed back their risk appetites even further; the Nasdaq led the way lower, losing 1.46% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average proved most resilient, shedding just 0.95% [see also 5 ETF Plays For Doomsday Predictions]. Aside from the disappointment arising from the latest FOMC meeting, investors also fretted over worse-than-expected economic data. The March ADP employment report showed a payroll increase of 209,000 in the private-sector, which unfortunately fell short of the previous reading of 230,000. Bearish pressures took hold of Wall Street on Tuesday as investors broadly pulled the sell trigger following the latest FOMC meeting. The Fed minutes revealed that central bank members “generally agreed that the economic outlook, while a bit stronger overall, was broadly similar to that at the time of their January meeting”. Equity markets were hoping for hints of additional quantitative easing, which inevitably led to a sell-off after the Fed made no such suggestions [see also 3 ETFs For The End Of Operation Twist].
