Through nearly eight months, 2010 has been an extremely rough year for energy ETFs, including both traditional oil and gas-focused funds as well as “greener” alternative energy products. Traditional energy ETFs have plummeted thanks in large part to the fallout from the Gulf oil spill, which has limited demand for many oil service firms and painted an uncertain regulatory picture. Meanwhile, alternative energy ETFs have seen generous subsidies cut by cash-strapped governments across the world as “austerity” became a new buzz word. Both sectors have also been battered by weak overall economic outlooks; the grim forecasts have helped to moderate oil prices, which in turn has taken some of the urgency out of the hunt for alternative fuel sources. Some alternative energy ETFs are down as much as 30% on the year.
Since 2005, investment in clean energy increased by 230% to $162 billion in 2009. Echoing similar trends occurring throughout the global economy, emerging markets have stepped up their push to become leaders in the development of alternative energy technologies. Last year alone, China invested $34.6 billion in clean energy, while the U.S. added $18.6 billion. In addition, the World Bank recently released a report saying that the six major East Asian economies will together need roughly $80 billion in investment per year in order to stabilize their greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Despite these large numbers, clean energy only produces 6% of the world’s power suggesting that there is still plenty of room to run for this up-and-coming industry.
So far in 2010 one of the worst-performing sectors has been alternative energy, with some ETFs on pace to post double digit losses in the first quarter. This sharp downturn is due to a variety of factors that have combined to yield one of the worst stretches for the industry in recent memory. First, trouble in Europe has led to a strengthening of the dollar, which has helped to keep crude oil prices in check (until recently at least). With oil below $80 for most of the early part of the year, cries for development of alternative energy sources have been quieted. Furthermore, large budget deficits in many developed markets have forced some governments to drastically scale back solar and wind power subsidies to plug budget holes. Spain and Germany, two of the largest alternative energy producers in the world, have either cut or are planning to severely cut subsides [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Earth Day Special: Definitive Guide To Clean Energy ETFs

Solar ETFs Off To A Not-So-Bright Start

Will Climate Deal Boost Alternative Energy ETFs?

Ten Worst Performing ETFs Of 2010

Uncertain Future For Energy ETFs

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
