Despite the impressive performance from a number of different commodities, inflows into commodity ETFs have been light in 2010. After more than $30 billion flowed into commodity ETPs in 2009, inflows through the first ten months totaled only about $10 billion–almost all of which was attributable to physically-backed gold products. Part of the explanation for the relatively slow weak inflows may be related to frustrations with the performance of certain futures-based products. The underlying holdings of most commodity ETFs are not the actual commodity, but rather futures contracts written on the specified resource [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Inflation-Fighting ETFs Back In Focus

Inflation ETF Special: 25 ETF Ideas To Fight Rising Prices

What Every Investor Should Know About Commodity ETF Investing

Beyond TIP: 10 ETFs To Protect Against Inflation

ETFs To Invest Like Ron Paul

The cause of the latest bout of inflationary anxiety is of course the QE2 program recently announced by the Federal Reserve that calls for the purchase of hundreds of billions of dollars in bonds in an effort to push down borrowing costs and kick start the economy.
Adam Patti is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of IndexIQ, a New York-based ETF issuer behind several of the most innovative ETF products to hit the market in recent years. He recently took time out of his busy schedule to discuss commodity investing, ETF options for protecting against inflation, and replicating hedge fund-like returns through ETFs. ETF Database (ETFdb): IndexIQ is perhaps best known for its hedge fund replication ETFs, including the Multi-Strategy Tracker ETF (QAI) and IQ Hedge Macro Tracker ETF (MCRO). Why might investors want exposure to a hedge fund-like asset? Adam Patti (AP): First off, there are some misconceptions about this asset class; many investors think that hedge funds are designed to “shoot the lights out” in terms of performance, because they hear all these fantastic numbers that some of these hedge funds put up once in a while. More than likely, the boom is attributable to a number of different factors. Correlation between international equity markets (and even between stocks and bonds) has surged in recent years, increasing both the importance and difficulty of adding non-correlated assets to investor portfolios.
