Despite widespread predictions for a surge in CPI in the wake of unprecedented injections of liquidity into global financial markets, upward pressure on prices has not yet materialized–at least not in many developed markets. The prospect of what seems to be an inevitable outcome has prompted many to take measures to protect their portfolios, increasing allocations to asset classes expected to generally perform well when inflationary pressures spike. Countless investors have been wrong in their calls on inflation, ranging from Wall Street titans such as Morgan Stanley to smaller money managers and individuals. Another frustrating aspect of inflation is the difficulty many investors face in protecting their portfolios from the phenomenon. Debates over the relative merits of various securities as safeguards against inflation have raged for decades, with different investors pursuing different strategies.
Global X, the New York-based ETF issuer that already offers sector-specific China and Brazil funds and a number of ETFs focused on commodity-intensive equities, continued to expand its pipeline; the firm recently made an SEC filing laying the groundwork for an oil equities ETF. Although details from the filing were scarce, there were a few revelations: The fund will track the Solactive Global Oil Equities Index, a global benchmark tracking firms engaged in the production and refinement of crude oil around the world. This index is free float adjusted, liquidity tested and market capitalization-weighted index that is designed to measure the performance of oil companies globally that are highly correlated with the price of oil, as defined by Structured Solutions AG. Currently, the index has 25 component securities. Although details from the filing were scarce, there were a few revelations: The fund will track the Solactive Global Oil Equities Index, a global benchmark tracking firms engaged in the production and refinement of crude oil around the world. Despite the impressive performance from a number of different commodities, inflows into commodity ETFs have been light in 2010. This rapid increase–along with a variety of natural disasters, such as the devastating wheat crisis in Russia earlier this summer–has put a premium on the world’s natural resources and the companies that harvest or develop them. The newest foray into this market segment came earlier today when State Street, the Boston based ETF giant best known for its S&P 500 SPDR (SPY) and gold ETF (GLD), launched the newest addition to its product lineup, the Global Natural Resources ETF (GNR). More than likely, the boom is attributable to a number of different factors. Correlation between international equity markets (and even between stocks and bonds) has surged in recent years, increasing both the importance and difficulty of adding non-correlated assets to investor portfolios. Given the relatively weak correlation with other asset classes, commodities have found a home in many investors’ portfolios. Commodities have historically served as an effective inflation hedge, and many are once again turning to natural resources to protect assets from a surge in the CPI. Regardless of the cause, commodity investing is hot, and many investors have turned to ETFs as [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Inflation-Fighting ETFs Back In Focus

101 ETF Lessons Every Financial Advisor Should Learn

Beyond TIP: 10 ETFs To Protect Against Inflation

Commodity ETF For A Regulation-Happy World

More Ideas For “Contango-Free” Commodity Access

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
