The past week was, again, extremely choppy as European rumors took center stage, leaving investors fixated on events coming out of Germany and France. While some progress was definitely made in the negotiations, this week’s summit could play a key role in determining the long term future of the currency bloc. Beyond these events, investors also cheered the results of earnings season as a number of key companies gave their quarterly updates. For the most part, these reports were positive, especially in the banking and transports sector, although a rare earnings miss from Apple helped to drag down tech over the past five trading sessions. Nevertheless, broad markets rose over the past five days while bonds and other safe havens such as gold continued to slump, posting modest losses in the time period. ETF Shakeup: HOLDRS Headed For Extinction, ELEMENTS To Follow?

The competitive landscape of the ETF industry has evolved rapidly over the last several years, with several new players–both big and small–making a push into the space. From financial giants such as RBS and Citi to relative unknowns such as Javelin and Precidian, the roster of active ETF issuers has grown to nearly four dozen. Now, mirroring a trend playing out in the lineup of exchange-traded products, it appears that some contraction is in order. Coming months could see a few ETP issuers wiped off the map, as a series of fund closures and mergers should reduce the number of companies that market exchange-traded products [see also ETF Update: Pipeline Continues To Fill]. Wednesday’s ETF To Watch: Internet HOLDRS (HHH)

Although worries over the debt ceiling continue to plague equity markets, some sectors of the financial world have been given a boost by quality earnings reports from a variety of firms. Most recently, investors received good news from casino operator Las Vegas Sands which rose more than 5% in after hours trading, while others focused in on a good report from Amazon in order to get a better perspective on the broader consumer side of the economy. While the firm saw earnings slip from the year ago period, the figure was still sharply ahead of Wall Street estimates, helping to boost shares of the company in yesterday’s after-hours session by close to 6%. The Seattle-based company beat estimates by six cents a share when it reported profits of 41 cents/share for the most recent quarter. ETF Insider: Bullish On Equities

Wall Street regained some lost ground last week as investors appeared less fearful to jump back into the equity markets. Corporate earnings were mostly upbeat, although several big financial institutions missed estimates while Apple and Google both blew past analyst predictions. Emerging market equity indexes also ended the week in green territory. Gold took a breather from its upward surge and traded sideways all of last week, managing to set an all-time high at $1,610 an ounce on Tuesday. Crude oil on the other hand slowly crept up from $96 a barrel on Monday and ended up closing right under $100 a barrel on Friday. UBS Debuts Internet IPO ETNs

UBS rolled out two new ETNs on Thursday, debuting products that offer exposure to Internet-related companies that have recently completed an initial public offering (IPO). The new ETRACS Internet IPO ETN (EIPO) is linked to the UBS Internet IPO Index, a benchmark that consists of companies that maintain operations focused on the Internet that have gone public over the last three years. The underlying portfolio includes many of the companies that have recently completed high profile IPOs, such as Pandora Media, OpenTable, and LinkedIn. In order to be included in the underlying index, companies must fall into one of three GICS Industry designations: Internet Software & Services, Internet & Catalog Retail, or Media. UBS also launched a monthly leveraged product linked to the same index, the Monthly 2xLeveraged Internet IPO (EIPL). Friday’s ETF To Watch: Merrill Lynch Internet HOLDR (HHH)

Today’s market has been especially rough for consumer product companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Colgate Palmolive, and Procter & Gamble, which have all sunk on weak guidance thanks to disappointing growth in developed markets. While these product makers have tumbled some had hoped that the key retailers would be able to avoid this malaise and continue posting strong growth figures with high margin levels. This hope was put to the test last night after the bell when one of the biggest retailers in the world, Amazon.com (AMZN), gave its earnings report for the most recent quarter. For the quarter, AMZN reported earnings of 91 cents a share on revenues of $12.95 billion. Although Amazon beat consensus earnings by three cents it missed revenue marks by $20 million, a fact which caused a massive sell-off in the company, pushing shares down by close to 10% before ending the after-hours session [...]

Internet ETFs: Five Ways To Play

In the early days of the ETF industry most of the products were broad-based equity funds that offered exposure to domestic and international stock markets. But as ETFs have gained market share and become more popular with both buy-and-holders and more active traders, products have become increasingly specialized. Since the debut of the sector SPDRs in 1998, dozens of ETFs targeting various corners of U.S. and global equity markets have been introduced; recent innovations have included small cap sector ETFs and sector-specific emerging market funds. Additions to the ETF product lineup have also been increasingly granular, going beyond the nine traditional sector allocations (ten if telecom is included) to focus on sub-industries; there are multiple ETFs offering exposure to homebuilders, biotech firms, and makers of semiconductors, just to name a few. So much for a nice, quiet Thanksgiving week. Between the back-and-forth negotiations surrounding a bailout of Ireland and yet another escalation of tensions between North and South Korea, recent sessions have featured no shortage of action. Now investors turn their attention to the U.S. consumer, preparing to analyze spending habits during the make-it-or-break-it shopping season. According to the National Retail Federation, the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas accounted for more than 19% of total sales last year. For some companies, the holiday season can account for between 25% and 40% of annual sales, highlighting the importance of the next few weeks for the retail corner of the economy. Not surprisingly, the 2010 version of the holiday shopping season has seen a continued push via an aggressive marketing campaign. With yesterday’s bearish report from the Federal Reserve, many investors are growing increasingly wary of a double dip recession. In his report to Congress, Fed Chair Ben Bernanke said that the outlook for the economy is ‘unusually uncertain’ and that this may prompt the board “to take further policy actions as needed.” This report sent investors heading for the exits and caused most major benchmarks to fall by over 1% in a matter of minutes, leaving many to wonder, like Bernanke, which way the economy will head in the near future [also see Five ETFs For Capital Preservation]. Despite the weakness in the overall market, some internet and technology companies have reported pretty impressive earnings over the past two weeks; Apple and Intel have led the way higher for the technology sector.
