This past week presented yet another frustrating set of circumstances for investors to digest. Not only have European woes been weighing heavily on markets, but the U.S. debt committee has until Wednesday to pass an important budget haircut and for the time being, all signs point to a deadlock. August saw equities tumble when the committee nearly failed to reach an agreement as investors endured one of the most volatile months in recent history. Overall, equities had a rough week, with two straight days of heavy losses that could not be recovered from. Perhaps the biggest story on the week came from oil smashing through the $100/barrel mark, though crude would subsequently fall the following two days. ETF Shakeup: HOLDRS Headed For Extinction, ELEMENTS To Follow?

The competitive landscape of the ETF industry has evolved rapidly over the last several years, with several new players–both big and small–making a push into the space. From financial giants such as RBS and Citi to relative unknowns such as Javelin and Precidian, the roster of active ETF issuers has grown to nearly four dozen. Now, mirroring a trend playing out in the lineup of exchange-traded products, it appears that some contraction is in order. Coming months could see a few ETP issuers wiped off the map, as a series of fund closures and mergers should reduce the number of companies that market exchange-traded products [see also ETF Update: Pipeline Continues To Fill]. UBS Debuts Internet IPO ETNs

UBS rolled out two new ETNs on Thursday, debuting products that offer exposure to Internet-related companies that have recently completed an initial public offering (IPO). The new ETRACS Internet IPO ETN (EIPO) is linked to the UBS Internet IPO Index, a benchmark that consists of companies that maintain operations focused on the Internet that have gone public over the last three years. The underlying portfolio includes many of the companies that have recently completed high profile IPOs, such as Pandora Media, OpenTable, and LinkedIn. In order to be included in the underlying index, companies must fall into one of three GICS Industry designations: Internet Software & Services, Internet & Catalog Retail, or Media. UBS also launched a monthly leveraged product linked to the same index, the Monthly 2xLeveraged Internet IPO (EIPL). Recent weeks have been plagued by foreign conflicts which have push markets back and forth between steep losses and quick rebounds. First, a revolution in Egypt which lasted for several weeks, led to President Mubarak relinquishing his position in what was considered a major win for social rights and democracy in the country. This movement has inspired others to rebel in nations like Bahrain and Libya, the latter of which, is reportedly on the brink of a civil war thanks to the refusal of their own strongman to step down from his multi-decade rule. In the early days of the ETF industry most of the products were broad-based equity funds that offered exposure to domestic and international stock markets. But as ETFs have gained market share and become more popular with both buy-and-holders and more active traders, products have become increasingly specialized. Since the debut of the sector SPDRs in 1998, dozens of ETFs targeting various corners of U.S. and global equity markets have been introduced; recent innovations have included small cap sector ETFs and sector-specific emerging market funds. Additions to the ETF product lineup have also been increasingly granular, going beyond the nine traditional sector allocations (ten if telecom is included) to focus on sub-industries; there are multiple ETFs offering exposure to homebuilders, biotech firms, and makers of semiconductors, just to name a few. This focus of this past week was diverted overseas, as foreign affairs weighed heavily on U.S. equities. One of the biggest stories came out of China when the country hinted that they may raise their rates in an effort to cool off their overheating economy and limit surging inflation. Friday then saw an announcement that Chinese banks would be forced to raise their reserves; news that looks likely to curb loan growth in the country and could be the step before China raises its benchmark rate. Meanwhile, in Europe, traders were spooked in the early part of the week as fears over an Irish debt default plagued markets and sent investor confidence in the common currency into a tailspin. Equity markets are coming off another rough stretch, as the S&P 500 fell by close to 4% and oil lost nearly 7% last week on increased anxiety over the global economic outlook. These fears came as a result of the Fed’s August policy meeting in which the central bank announced that it was leaving rates steady but would reinvest the proceeds from its maturing mortgage-backed security portfolio in long-term bonds. With this announcement of “quantitative easing part II” many investors sold off their shares and fled for the relative safety of gold and Treasury bonds, both of which held up very well in light of the crisis. While news was not good in the U.S., European markets showed some signs of life; the region reported better-than-expected 1.0% GDP growth for the most recent quarter, led by powerhouse Germany which saw its economy surge higher by 2.2% for the quarter. Tech ETFs In Focus As Apple (AAPL) Reports Earnings

Earnings season is upon us yet again, giving anxious investors plenty to chew on as equity markets look for direction in the second half of the year. The first week of this critical stretch saw a number of reports come in all over the board; some bellwethers posted solid numbers and guidance while others disappointed investors with dismal outlooks and soft growth projections [see ETF Winners And Losers From Week One]. Thus far, the tech and financials sectors have been battered; Intel reported strong earnings, but IBM turned in light revenues and Texas Instruments shares sank after missing estimates. In perhaps the most anticipated report of the week, Apple (AAPL) disclosed Q3 earnings after the market closed today. Analysts had predicted the company to report revenues of $14.75 billion and EPS of $3.11; AAPL crushed those marks, producing revenues of $15.7 billion and EPS of $3.55 for the latest quarter, [...]

Equity markets are coming off one of the wildest weeks in recent memory, as a plethora of issues combined to cause anxiety and sink the Dow more than 1,500 points on the week. Continued troubles in Greece pushed European equity markets lower, as protests of the harsh austerity measures passed by the government in order to obtain a 110 billion euro bailout rattled investors. On Thursday, an apparent trading error or computer glitch caused markets to plummet and pushed the Dow lower by 762 points in just 23 minutes (see Ten Shocking Charts From The “Flash Crash”).
