Despite some rather significant bumps along the road in 2011, many asset classes are now well into positive territory on a one year trailing basis as January draws to a close, riding high thanks to a strong finish to last year and start to 2012. Included on that list are a number of leveraged ETFs that seek to amplify exposure to various asset classes, highlighting the potential to use these products to capture attractive returns over extended periods of time [see also Leveraged ETFs FAQs]. That might come as a bit of a surprise to some investors, as there remains a bit of a misconception over the performance attributes of leveraged ETPs that are held for multiple months. Unfortunately, bullish sentiment quickly wore off as European debt woes resurfaced, sparking a wave of fear seeing as how policymakers overseas have yet to decide on a comprehensive plan to ensure stability. The past week was, again, extremely choppy as European rumors took center stage, leaving investors fixated on events coming out of Germany and France. While some progress was definitely made in the negotiations, this week’s summit could play a key role in determining the long term future of the currency bloc. Beyond these events, investors also cheered the results of earnings season as a number of key companies gave their quarterly updates. For the most part, these reports were positive, especially in the banking and transports sector, although a rare earnings miss from Apple helped to drag down tech over the past five trading sessions. Nevertheless, broad markets rose over the past five days while bonds and other safe havens such as gold continued to slump, posting modest losses in the time period. Warning: Obama’s $3.73 Trillion Budget Could Sink These Three ETFs

Recent months have brought some indications that the storm clouds over the U.S. economy are beginning to clear. Manufacturing activity is picking up again, earnings reports have been generally impressive, and consumer spending and confidence have shown signs of a pulse. Though major indexes have reached (or nearly reached) pre-recession levels, there are still lingering concerns. Job creation–believed by many economists to be an indication of a sustainable recovery has been non-existent. And though we have ousted the sub-prime mortgage issues and strengthened our dollar to some extent, we are still left with one other major issue: debt–over $14 trillion of it to be precise.
