Judging from the sideways price action on Wall Street this week, it seems that investors went through the full cycle of emotions. With corporate earnings seasons drawing to a close at home investors are once again focusing more on economic data releases. On the home front, economic news were mixed throughout the week; ISM data came in better-than-expected, although the latest ADP employment and factory orders report both missed. Small Cap Indonesia ETF Debuts (IDXJ)

Van Eck, the firm that rolled out the first Indonesia ETF a little more than three years ago, introduced a complementary ETF today that will target small cap stocks in the emerging Asian economy. The Market Vectors Indonesia Small-Cap ETF (IDXJ) began trading on the NYSE Arca on Wednesday, becoming the first ETF to offer targeted exposure to small cap Indonesian stocks. The new ETF will seek to replicate the Market Vectors Indonesia Small-Cap Index, a benchmark that includes small cap companies that are domiciled in Indonesia or that generate the majority of their revenues in Indonesia. At the end of February, the underlying index consisted of about 27 constituents with an average market cap just below $700 million. For many investors, March 9, 2009 was a major turning point; on that day the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed below 6,550, capping a disastrous stretch that had erased billions of dollars from portfolios around the world. Fortunately, that proved to be the low point of the recent recession; the next day markets rallied, and continued to move generally higher throughout the end of the year. So it should be no surprise that most ETFs offering exposure to risky asset classes now boast impressive three year return figures; most are well into positive territory, and many have more than doubled over the past 36 months or so. One of the biggest stories in the investing world over the past few years as been the rise of emerging markets. These countries continue to grow at an impressive clip and are in a much better position from a fiscal perspective than their developed market counterparts. Furthermore, the countries often have more favorable demographics than fully-industrialized nations, suggesting that more gains could be had in the future as well. Three ETFs To Watch This Week: CNDA, EWG, IDX

This past week was a brutal one for equity markets as a wave of selling crushed sectors across the board. The benchmark S&P 500 index saw its value decline by nearly 6.5% on the week, marking one of the roughest five day stretches in recent memory. Generally speaking, this decline was thanks to investors being pretty disappointed with the Fed’s new response to the markets as many were hoping for more of a boost than the $400 billion for “Operation Twist”. Due to this lack of more stimulus from the Fed, as well as continued turmoil in Europe, many investors capitulated and headed for safer assets such as Treasury bonds instead. Yet, even traditional safe havens, such as gold and silver, saw heavy selling pressure as well; GLD finished the week lower by 9.2% and SLV was down 23.9% in the same time period. Van Eck Plans Small Cap Indonesia ETF

Van Eck has filed details for what would be the first ETF to offer exposure to small cap Indonesian stocks, laying the groundwork for further expansion in the ETF industry. The recent SEC filing shed some light on the proposed Market Vectors Indonesia Small-Cap ETF, which would join a pair of other products offering exposure to the red hot emerging Asian economy. According to the ETF Country Exposure Tool, there are a number of ETFs that offer exposure to Indonesian equities, including the popular Market Vectors Indonesia ETF (IDX). What Slowdown? Indonesia ETFs Hold Their Ground In Global Crisis

While 2011 may have gotten off to a good start for many equity markets, a summer slowdown has hit stocks across the globe. Worries over the fallout from a downgrade of American debt have now shifted to concerns over more stimulus either by the Federal Reserve or by Congress. Yet more measures coming down the pike seems uncertain at best, leaving the American economy to muddle through its current economic malaise. Meanwhile, in Europe things aren’t much better as the debt contagion striking the peripheral markets of Spain, Greece, and Italy, is now threatening to strike core nations such as France and Germany as well. Van Eck Plans Mongolia ETF

Van Eck, the issuer behind a number of country-specific emerging markets ETFs, recently laid the groundwork to launch what would be the industry’s first Mongolia ETF. In an SEC filing last week, the company outlined an ETF that would seek to replicate a to-be-determined index that would consist of companies domiciled and primarily listed on an exchange in Mongolia or that generates at least half of its revenue in Mongolia. The filing didn’t include an expense ratio or ticker symbol for the proposed fund. According to the ETF country exposure tool, there are currently four equity ETFs that include Mongolia in their top ten country allocations, though none makes a meaningful allocation. Mongolian stocks account for about 0.8% of the PowerShares Global Coal Portfolio (PKOL) and even less of the MSCI Pacific ex-Japan Index Fund (EPP) and Vanguard Pacific ETF (VPL). This past week marked the start to earnings season, and for the most part the reports disappointed investors and sparked sell-offs. One of the most important reports to hit the market this week came from banking giant JP Morgan. The firm reported a huge profit increase of 67% but sluggish revenues and little revenue growth kept the company’s stock in check. The banking sector was also hit by news of a brewing scandal involving several of the country’s largest banks and the possibility that they illegally influenced one of the world’s key interest rates, LIBOR. Thanks to this, markets hit their lows for the week on Thursday as these fears combined with weakness in the unemployment claims department to rekindle investor pessimism.
