Euro zone debt woes resurfaced on Tuesday, dragging down equity markets all over the globe, after Greek Prime Minister, George Papandreou, put the latest “bailout plan” to a referendum. Greek default fears returned to the market and investors were quick to sell, although domestic equity indexes reclaimed lost ground the following day. Surprisingly, Ben Bernanke did not spook the markets today as investors were cautiously bullish after the Fed made no announcement of additional stimulus, perhaps suggesting that the economy is on its way to a slow, but steady, recovery. Gold has been inching above support at the $1,700 level so far this week, and the precious metal closed right around $1,735 an ounce on Wednesday.
Improving optimism over the Euro zone debt negotiations coupled with positive earnings and economic data releases at home pushed stock markets higher last week. Investor confidence improved considerably as domestic equity indexes climbed higher above key resistance levels and held onto gains the entire week. Bailout talks in the Euro zone reignited fears of inflation, paving the way higher for gold. The precious metal finally broke out of its trading range and settled near $1,740 an ounce to close out the week. We anticipate relatively higher volatility in the markets this week given the pivotal FOMC talk and ECB interest rate decision. Weekly Outlook The coming week will focus on the European Central Bank interest rate decision, while at home investors will be paying close attention to the latest unemployment figure. Below, we highlight ETFs that may see an increase in trading activity as relevant market data is released and [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETF Insider: It’s All Greek To Me

ETF Insider: Greek Drama Steals Spotlight

For ETF Investors, Currency Exposure Matters (More Than You Might Think)

NSX Data: VWO Leads All ETFs In YTD Inflows

March ETF Stats: Another Solid Quarter

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
Earnings season is well underway and investors on Wall Street appear to be quite content with the latest round of corporate performance results from industry leaders. Debt-woes stemming from the Euro zone continue to dominate headlines as investors anxiously await for policymakers to agree upon a comprehensive plan in the near future. Domestic equity indexes climbed higher on Friday to end the week in solid green territory, bolstered by optimism over McDonald’s better-than-expected earnings and the upcoming European Union summit.
Wall Street started off the week in red territory following concerns that the euro zone debt-drama may take much longer to resolve than investors had originally anticipated last week. Euphoria was quick to return to the markets on Tuesday, however, as stocks soared in the last hour of trading, following an unofficial report that Germany and France had ironed out a bailout package to assist the debt-burdened euro zone member nations. Stocks drifted lower on Wednesday despite a better-than-expected Beige Book report, which showed that the U.S. economy continues to expand at the same steady pace as seen in the months prior. Gold remains range-bound, although the precious metal has been drifting lower all week, with futures contracts setting near $1,640 an ounce on Wednesday. France and Germany pledged their full support to the debt-stricken currency block and promised a concrete plan to ensure stability by November. Gold remains range-bound and the precious metal has been drifting inch by inch along rising support, possibly preparing to break out past the $1,700 level this week. Earnings season continues and investors will have platefuls of corporate performance reports from several industry giants to digest this week. Weekly Outlook The coming week is stacked with major economic releases on the international front, including Chinese GDP and inflation data from the United Kingdom.
Thanks to the poor economic situation plaguing America, a number of proposals have been released in order to try to end this malaise. Massive stimulus was thrown at the market by leaders in D.C. while the Fed sought to do its part by embarking on multiple rounds of quantitative easing. These purchases of government bonds helped to push down rates for many short-term debt securities but did little else when it came to jump-starting the economy. Yet, with political gridlock afflicting Washington, no relief seems to be on the horizon from the Federal government, leaving Bernanke and Co. as the only hope for those who are begging for more stimulative measures. Thanks to this pressure, all eyes will likely be on the Federal Reserve and its highly-anticipated FOMC meeting this week. Many will look for the group to announce further plans for easing, or at least a shift in the policy tools currently being employed.
Equities started the trading week in a hole so speak, opening far below Friday’s close on Monday morning. Stocks did manage to regain some lost ground before lunch time though, and industry giants in the tech sector lead the way higher for much of the day. Investor sentiment in regards to the euro zone is back into pessimistic territory as policymakers failed to come up with a concrete plan over the weekend and last week’s hopes of easing the debt crisis have quickly evaporated. The outlook for the U.S. housing industry also took a hit as the National Association of Home Builders reported a drop in the builder’s sentiment index to 14, from last month’s reading of 15. David Crowe, the NAHB’s chief economist, said that the weakening economy and high unemployment have made short-term prospects for the homebuilding industry “fairly bleak”.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average is, after an extremely shaky summer period, back in positive territory for the year. Equity markets have gotten off to a strong start this week, opening above last Friday’s close on Monday and pushing higher through Wednesday. As talked about in previous editions of ETF Insider, the S&P 500 has managed to close above our outlined resistance at 1,200 for three consecutive days now, however, the trading volume in SPY has been quite light, leading us to question the recent strength in the market. Stocks have been broadly rising these past few days and gold had been holding its head above $1,800 an ounce and inching higher, another sign that investors are not quite convinced to sell safe haven assets and jump back into the stock market just yet. Economic data releases on the home front have been mixed, including a disappointing Consumer Confidence report [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Tuesday’s ETF Chart To Watch: SPDR Gold Trust (GLD)

ETF Insider: Markets In Limbo

101 ETF Lessons Every Financial Advisor Should Learn

2011 Recap: Another Big Year For ETFs

Ten Unexpected Observations On YTD ETF Returns

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
