Despite Friday’s relatively large miss in GDP, stocks were able to post a week in the black as strong earnings helped major indexes make a run higher. Unfortunately, it seems that we are still at the mercy of Europe as any news about Spanish debts will rock markets. The coming week features the tail end of earnings season, as a number of the world’s largest companies have already reported. Perhaps the most notable result came form Apple (AAPL) who crushed analyst estimates and saw their share price skyrocket as a result. As earnings season comes to an end, investors will have one more week to focus on blue chip quarterly results to help guide their trades and positions. Last week saw earnings come in as a mixed bag, but that all changed on Friday when unemployment figures shattered the mold and dropped to 8.3% with 243,000 jobs added in January. But this is just the beginning; in order to prove that we are fully on the rebound, we need several more months of strong growth as well as falling unemployment. For now, however, investors are happy to finally have some good news in a relatively lackluster week. Tuesday’s ETF To Watch: DJ U.S. Oil & Gas Exploration And Production ETF (IEO)

Although the global economy remains shaky to say the least, commodity prices have been soaring as worries over the U.S. dollar continue to dominate the market. Oil prices have held up especially well considering the possibility of a reduction in demand in the foreseeable future and are currently trading around the triple digit mark. This strength in energy prices has helped to boost earnings for a variety of firms tied to the oil and gas industries be it companies that engage in drilling or exploration of these resources. In fact, before the bell yesterday, Baker Hughes, a major driller of energy resources, reported a massive earnings increase as profits at the company nearly tripled from one year ago. This strength in the corporate side of the energy story has put pressure on a variety of other names in the field as well, many of which are reporting earnings later on [...]

IndexIQ Debuts Global Oil Small Cap ETF (IOIL)

IndexIQ rolled out the latest ETF offering exposure to oil companies today, debuting the IQ Global Oil Small Cap ETF (IOIL). The new ETF will be the first exchange-traded product to offer exposure to global small cap companies engaged in the oil sector, including areas of exploration and production, refining and marketing, and equipment, services and drilling. IOIL will seek to replicate the IQ Global Oil Small Cap Index, a benchmark that consists of about 60 small cap oil companies from more than a dozen emerging and developed economies. Oil refining and marketing stocks account for about 40% of the underlying benchmarks, with exploration and production firms making up 37% or so and the remainder attributable to equipment, services, and drilling firms. Stocks listed on U.S. exchanges account for about 45% of total assets, with Canada, Thailand, Colombia, and Japan making up the most significant international allocations. New Twist On [...]

Optimism over the health of the global economy has surged in recent weeks as investors have scooped up shares in a variety of industries in order to benefit from a budding recovery. This joyful mood has also helped to boost the price of crude oil which was trending close to its 52 week high, approaching $94/bbl. However, in recent days, fears over a slowdown in key emerging markets and talks of a supply boost from OPEC, have weighed heavily on the price of oil forcing the price back down below the $90 mark. Will Iraqi Oil Deals Boost Energy ETF?

On Monday, news of coordinated bomb attacks in Baghdad made headlines around the world, highlighting the ongoing violence that continues to grip Iraq. Also on Monday, the government reported that the man known as “Chemical Ali,” one of the most ruthless allies of Saddam Hussein, was executed for crimes against humanity. Receiving far less attention was a development in the country that could have a major impact on the Iraqi economy and the global crude oil market. A consortium comprised of Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch PLC has reportedly finalized a deal with the Iraqi government to develop the massive West Qurna phase 1 oil field in southern Iraq, a welcome sign of progress in the efforts to introduce advanced western technologies to one of the most oil-rich regions in the world. Jefferies Launches Wildcatters ETF (WCAT)

The Jefferies | TR/J CRB Wildcatters Exploration & Production Equity ETF (WCAT) began trading this week, offering investors a way to gain exposure to equity securities of a global universe of companies engaged in the production of oil and natural gas sectors. The index underlying WCAT is a modified cap-weighted benchmark. To be eligible for inclusion, companies must maintain a market capitalization between $200 million and $2 billion and must generate at least 75% of annual revenues from the exploration and production of oil and natural gas. WCAT allocates approximately two-thirds of its holdings to U.S. companies, with the remainder focused on Canadian equities. When allocated by proven reserves, about 66% of the underlying index is composed of natural gas firms, with 32% allocated to oil companies. Oil prices have nearly doubled from January 2009 levels, and many investors are once again looking towards energy ETFs as potential beneficiaries of a prolonged jump in prices. But unlike previous oil rallies, the domestic energy sector has delivered a muted performance in the wake of the most recent run-up. The industry followed “black gold’s” upward path and finished 2009 well in the black, but prices were somewhat held in check, frustrating some investors who chose to play an expected oil rally through energy equities. Experts Bullish On “Inflation ETFs”

One of the world’s most successful bond managers is encouraging investors to bet against predictions made recently by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who recently told a group of business leaders that inflation was not a major concern and could even move lower from its current levels. Bill Tedford, who manages a bond portfolio for Stephens Inc., believes that inflation is already evident and that the consumer price index (CPI) will surge over the next two years. Tedford is among the growing number of “inflation bugs” who believe that the massive injections of cash into the economy will ultimately result in a big uptick in inflation. Stephens has begun encouraging clients to move money into oil, timber, agriculture, and precious and industrial metals to protect against inflation.
