Equity markets struggled to pick a direction last week, fluctuating between small gains and pesky losses one day after the other. Late in the week, however, worse than expected economic data on the home front and escalating European debt woes managed to push the markets of a cliff one more time, with equity indexes sinking lower on Thursday and Friday and closing near the previous week’s low point. From a technical perspective, most charts still look “broken”, and the surge in volume during the sell-offs has been a bit worrisome since money seems to be flowing out of the market and stocks have yet to establish definitive support around current levels. ETF Insider: Bullish On Equities

Wall Street regained some lost ground last week as investors appeared less fearful to jump back into the equity markets. Corporate earnings were mostly upbeat, although several big financial institutions missed estimates while Apple and Google both blew past analyst predictions. Emerging market equity indexes also ended the week in green territory. Gold took a breather from its upward surge and traded sideways all of last week, managing to set an all-time high at $1,610 an ounce on Tuesday. Crude oil on the other hand slowly crept up from $96 a barrel on Monday and ended up closing right under $100 a barrel on Friday. Close to three years after the bottom fell out of the housing market, home prices still remain weak and are even declining once again in many major markets. Recently, the 10 city Case-Shiller Index showed that home prices have fallen back into dreaded double dip territory, suggesting that further declines could be in the cards. As a result, many homebuilders and construction firms have seen stock prices plunge in recent weeks as a response. After all, if the homes that are already on the market are not being bought, there is little hope that new homes can be quickly sold either, especially considering the vast inventory that is already in the marketplace.
