Vanguard Ups The Ante, Launches Russell ETFs

After recently rolling out a suite of ETFs linked to popular S&P indexes, Vanguard continued its push to grab a larger share of the ETF market on Wednesday by introducing seven new products linked to Russell benchmarks. The new Vanguard ETFs include: Russell 1000 ETF (VONE) Russell 1000 Value ETF (VONV) Russell 1000 Growth ETF (VONG) Russell 2000 ETF (VTWO) Russell 2000 Value ETF (VTWV) Russell 2000 Growth ETF (VTWG) Russell 3000 ETF (VTHR) The introduction of these new ETFs represents a new chapter in the intensifying battle between Vanguard and iShares for ETF market share. iShares is currently the biggest player in the U.S. market, accounting for nearly half of all ETF assets. U.S. equity markets sank in Thursday trading as all the major indexes fell sharply on weak data. The Dow plunged 1.4% while the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 both fell by 1.7% as traders fled risky assets for the relative safety of gold and U.S. Treasury bills which both saw their prices risen today’s trading session. Markets fell on news that weekly jobless claims rose by 12,000 to the half million mark, the highest in nine months. This marked the third straight week which saw a rise in jobless claims leading many to believe that the economy is likely to head back into a double dip recession as job losses accelerate and unemployment rises thanks to the ending of the stimulus and the census. “The rise in initial jobless claims over the past three weeks makes it difficult to maintain confidence in the recovery and suggests the labor market is [...]

Thanks to relatively bullish reports from Alcoa and CSX after the bell on Monday, equity markets surged higher in Tuesday trading; the S&P 500 and the Dow jumped by 1.5% and the Nasdaq rose by close to 2%. In commodity markets, gold jumped back above the $1,200 mark while oil surged more than 3% to top the $77/bbl mark. The boost came after a report from Alcoa in which the company predicted that global consumption of aluminum will grow this year by more than it had forecast just three months ago, helping to ease concerns over low growth and a weak economic recovery in developed markets. “When we go back to earnings and fundamentals, companies are delivering,” said Tom Karsten, senior managing partner at Karsten Financial in Fort Worth, Texas. Equity markets rose modestly in Wednesday trading, with the Dow gaining close to 1.4% and the Nasdaq gaining more than 2%. This sharp boost came after the Commerce Department reported that U.S. exports rose 3.2% in March to their highest level since October 2008. Among Dow components, Cisco Systems saw its shares rise by 3% after it reported a 63% jump in net income compared to a year ago. In the commodity markets, gold continued its unprecedented ascent higher, nearly reaching a level of $1250 an ounce as investors feared that the bailout in Europe would create higher levels of inflation. Fidelity To Offer Commission-Free Trading On 25 iShares ETFs

Fidelity Investments announced today that it will offer its retail customers commission-free online trades for a suite of 25 iShares ETFs. The funds included in the commission-free platform include ETFs in all nine domestic equity style/size categories, as well as international equity and fixed income options. “Fidelity has partnered with the leading ETF provider in the market to bring investors the best brokerage offering in the industry today,” said Kathleen A. When discussing their portfolios and asset allocation tactics, many investors and advisors indicate their preference for either value and growth investing in an effort to define their general investment strategy. ETF investors are no different, with dozens of funds that tilt their holdings towards each strategy offering ways to construct portfolios designed to take advantage of various investment theses. But many value and growth ETFs don’t offer pure plays on these investment strategies, and a surprising number of stocks can be found in both types of funds. Unemployment was the story of the day on Friday, as a report from the Labor Department showed that unemployment unexpectedly declined to 10.0% in November. Only 11,000 jobs were shed in the U.S., the best monthly showing since December 2007. Economists had predicted a loss of 125,000 jobs and an unemployment rate holding steady at 10.2%. The news sent risky assets higher and safe havens sharply lower. The ETFdb 60 Index, a benchmark measuring the performance of assets available through ETFs, was flat, adding just eight cents for the weeks final session as winners and losers were evenly divided. The recovery showed signs of falling into chaos on Thursday, with Treasury Secretary Geithner facing a firestorm in Washington as lawmakers called for his resignation and Dell reported a decline in profits of more than 50%. The wild ride on Wall Street continued on Thursday, with stocks posting big gains as Starbucks and CBS posted profits and retail sales moved slightly higher for the last month. Cisco led tech stocks higher, driving the Dow to a gain of more than 200 points for the first time in three months. Conventional wisdom says that while growth stocks outperform their value counterparts during recessions, value stocks gain the upper hand once the economy hits bottom, leading the way during the early recovery stage of most economic cycles. That’s according to a report by Russell Investments of Tacoma, Washington, which indicates that growth outperformance tends to reverse as soon as the economy bottom. So what are the numbers telling us about the market’s bullish run over the past few months? Is it the beginning of a recovery or simply another glimmer of false hope?
