Global X Debuts Pure Gold Miners ETF (GGGG), Oil ETF (XOIL)

Global X continued an aggressive expansion of its ETF lineup on Tuesday, announcing the launch of two funds offering exposure to companies engaged in the extraction and production of widely-traded commodities. The Pure Gold Miners ETF (GGGG) will seek to replicate the Solactive Global Pure Gold Miners Index, while the Oil Equities ETF (XOIL) is linked to the Solactive Global Oil Equities Index. GGGG will invest in global companies that generate the vast majority of their business from gold mining. Because the profitability of gold miners depends on the prevailing market price for their products (i.e., gold bullion), these stocks generally move in the same direction as spot gold. Gold miner ETFs have become a popular tool for playing gold prices, in part because they often trade as a leveraged play on spot precious metals prices. Despite bullish rhetoric from Washington and some indications of progress–the strength of the recent earnings season was a pleasant surprise–investors remain anxious in the current environment. With equity markets facing tremendous obstacles ahead, including elevated unemployment rates and an uncertain regulatory environment, safe havens have seen no shortage of interest [see Three ETFs To Protect Against A “Hindenburg Omen” Sighting]. The 18 month period between January 2009 and June 2010 saw an astonishing $232 billion flow out of equity markets. During that same period, a total of $559 billion was invested in fixed income, demonstrating that investors are clearly gravitating towards the low-risk/low-reward profile offered by bonds. Bond prices have soared and yields have plummeted in recent months, leaving more and more analysts worried that a bond bubble is forming. Energy ETFs In Focus As Exxon Mobil (XOM) Reports Earnings

In the midst of earnings season, stock markets are no strangers to volatility. The first week saw mixed results, with some industry leaders beating estimates while others disappointed the Street on weak revenue numbers. Week two was slightly more upbeat, with some major financial and energy companies –such as Morgan Stanley and Halliburton– crushed their estimates [see ETF Winners and Losers From The Second Week Of Earnings Season]. Along with these two industry bellwethers, Microsoft reported positive earnings, while Johnson & Johnson reported a dismal outlook for the remainder of 2010. A second week of earnings did little to clarify the market’s direction despite quality reports out of a host of important American corporations. After another flat Monday, markets surged on Tuesday after a strong report from Apple boosted hopes for the consumer discretionary sector as well as the electronics market. However, Fed Chair Ben Bernanke gave his biannual testimony to Congress on Wednesday in which he called the outlook for America’s economy ‘unusually uncertain’. He also stated that the Fed was considering other measures in order to boost the economy such as removing the interest that banks receive from keeping deposits at the Reserve which pushed equities down sharply and reignited fears over a double dip. Volatility is nothing new for the energy sector. Recent years have seen the price of crude oil skyrocket to $150 before plummeting to $30, taking the profitability and outlook for an entire industry along for the ride. This Week in ETFs: June 11th Edition

Overcoming a weak Wednesday, equity markets trended higher on the week; investors bought beaten-down shares as fears over the contagion in Europe temporarily subsided. The bulk of the week’s gain came on Thursday as the Dow gained 2.8% and the S&P 500 gained 3% on upbeat comments from the ECB as well as strong data from the U.S. and China. Shares of BP remained in focus as the company issued dividends despite political pressure from the Obama administration. In the commodity markets, gold retreated from its all time high last week to finish around the 1,230/oz. mark while oil trended higher to around $74/bbl. On Monday, news of coordinated bomb attacks in Baghdad made headlines around the world, highlighting the ongoing violence that continues to grip Iraq. Also on Monday, the government reported that the man known as “Chemical Ali,” one of the most ruthless allies of Saddam Hussein, was executed for crimes against humanity. Receiving far less attention was a development in the country that could have a major impact on the Iraqi economy and the global crude oil market. A consortium comprised of Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch PLC has reportedly finalized a deal with the Iraqi government to develop the massive West Qurna phase 1 oil field in southern Iraq, a welcome sign of progress in the efforts to introduce advanced western technologies to one of the most oil-rich regions in the world. Earnings Reports Put Energy ETFs In Focus

Earnings season continued on Wednesday with announcements from several major global energy firms. Exxon Mobil, the world’s largest oil company, reported earnings of $4.7 billion, or 98 cents per share, representing a 68% drop from year ago levels when the company set earnings records. Analysts had been expecting earnings of $1.06 per share, and Exxon’s shares slid more than 1% in Thursday morning trading. Although oil prices have rallied in recent weeks, they remain well below 2008 levels when crude averaged nearly $100 per barrel. Royal Dutch Shell, the largest European oil company, also reported a big drop in profits on Thursday, as net income fell to $3.25 billion compared to $8.45 billion a year ago. Shell shares also slipped in London trading as investors digested the earnings report and weighed the company’s future prospects. Energy ETFs: Global Or U.S.?

Over the last two weeks, crude oil prices have crept higher on hopes of a continued recovery and increasingly strong demand from China. With some analysts anticipating that crude will continue to rise, many investors have begun tilting their portfolios more heavily towards energy ETFs, hoping that higher margins will lead this sector to outperform the broad market. Those looking to make an ETF play on the energy sector will be quickly overwhelmed with options. There are several funds that offer direct exposure to crude oil through futures contracts (see our guide to crude oil ETFs for complete details).
