The massive $787 billion stimulus plan helped to avoid an even deeper recession, but failed to impact joblessness in any meaningful way. Instead of seeing a downturn in the unemployment rate as promised, Americans have seen the rate grow to double digits. Comprehensive healthcare reform was seemingly within days of becoming a reality, but now seems like a long shot. Outrage at Wall Street has ebbed and flowed, reaching a fever pitch in recent weeks following massive bonus payments in the financial sector. One rating that has gone down in Obama’s first year is the President’s approval rating, which is beginning to have far reaching effects on local and national elections. Approval ratings are slipping across the board and several incumbents are vulnerable heading into mid-term elections. The latest blow came from Senator Chris Dodd, the Chairman of the powerful Senate Banking Committee, who announced that he will not be seeking reelection later this year and will retire in December. Dodd has been a very controversial figure over the past few years thanks in large part to his ties to the financial service industry. Dodd has raised millions from financial professionals and has found himself mired in controversy over two loans he received from Countrywide. He also came under fire for his handling of bonuses from AIG, where Dodd supported a measure that allowed the embattled insurance company to make payouts to its executives. At the start of the year, Dodd found himself far behind in the polls in [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

ETFs With Significant Goldman Sachs Exposure

Five Financial ETFs Flying Under The Radar

Fund Managers Turn Bullish As “Risk Appetite” Increases

ETF Update: Pipeline Continues To Fill

Three ETFs To Invest Like David Tepper

This news has spanned all regions of the economy ranging from the transportation sector (Burlington Northern being taken over by Berkshire Hathaway) to pharmaceuticals (Schering Plough being acquired by Merck).
