While the “instant diversification” provided by ETFs and mutual funds can go a long way towards minimizing the impact of a single security on bottom line returns, it is important to note that certain ETFs can still feel the pinch from poor performances out of a single stock. The country appears to be deploying at least part of its vast reserves in order to help ease the blow of tightening policies, suggesting that a hard landing might not be ahead for China after all, increasing investor sentiment in the process. Domestic equity indexes extended gains into green territory for the 7th consecutive session yesterday, leading many to believe that the markets may be showing signs of a bottom in the near term. FOMC minutes from the most recent Fed meeting were released yesterday, revealing that policymakers are still concerned about the health of the domestic economic recovery. Gold drifted higher alongside equities, with the precious metal settling near $1,670 an ounce for the day.
Heading into the second half of the year, investors are divided over where global financial markets are headed. There is no shortage of bears, who point to depressing unemployment and consumer confidence figures as evidence that the recovery is quickly losing momentum (or perhaps never really had any in the first place). Others believe that the storm clouds over Europe are beginning to clear, and that sustained economic expansion in the emerging markets will be a catalyst to global growth. Against this uncertain backdrop, investors welcomed yet another highly important earnings season last week. Most Wall Street analysts expected corporate earnings to show a healthy increase from last year, when the economy was still mired deep in a recession. An impressive show in second quarter earnings could strengthen the argument that the U.S. recovery continues to plod along, despite weakness in overseas markets.
After a rough start to the holiday-shortened week, equity markets surged on Wednesday as most major indexes jumped by close to 3% on the day. This large jump came after ETF issuer and financial giant State Street said that it was likely to top analysts’ expectations for second-quarter earnings. This news sent shares of State Street up by close to 10% on the day and helped to boost financials and other beaten down sectors as investors grew more optimistic. However, markets couldn’t keep the momentum, as markets stayed flat for the rest of the week. This week, earnings season gets underway, and all eyes will be on a handful of American companies to see how corporate profits have been impacted by the current economic situation. These reports look to take center stage with bellwethers such as Google, Intel, JP Morgan and GE all reporting this week. These reports are likely [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

UBS Launches Risk On / Risk Off ETNs

Three ETFs To Watch This Week: IYH, SMH, IYG

ETF Winners And Losers From First Week Of Earnings Season

ETFs To Play Along With Soros, Paulson, and Fournier

101 ETF Lessons Every Financial Advisor Should Learn

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
After the passage of a controversial health care bill earlier this year, many analysts wondered if the Obama administration lacked the political capital to push through comprehensive financial reform as the next big domestic issue. After various packages met stiff resistance on several occasions, Senators passed the financial regulation overhaul bill on Thursday in a 59-39 vote. The bill, which comes months after a similar measure was passed by the House, looks to make sweeping changing to the nation’s financial industry. Among the most extensive changes in the legislation is a council of systemic risk regulators that would set capital stands for big banks and monitor systemic risk. Additionally, many derivatives transactions made by big banks, hedge funds and other groups would be required to go through clearinghouses and put their contracts through exchanges or swap-execution facilities. These changes are expected to have far-reaching effects on the industry with some [...]
Click here to read the original article on ETFdb.com.

Related Posts:

Financial ETFs Soar On New Basel Rules

Three ETFs To Watch This Week: GXC, IYG, VXX

Fund Managers Turn Bullish As “Risk Appetite” Increases

Three ETFs Crushed By BAC’s 2011 Freefall

HOLDRS Conversion Begins: Investor Action Required

<IMG SRC="http://ad.doubleclick.net/ad/N3220.etfdb.comOX20380/B6170340.6;sz=1x1;pc=[TPAS_ID];ord=[timestamp]?"
