Daily ETF Roundup: IYT Soars On Data, VXX Inches Lower

The bull train continues to roll full steam ahead as broad equity indexes managed to finish the trading session in green territory. The Dow Jones Industrial Average extended gains for the 7th consecutive session; the blue chip index gained 0.44% on the day, while the S&P 500 Index came out slightly ahead, tacking on a 0.60% gain. Gold managed to recoup some of the losses from yesterday’s sell-off; futures prices for the precious yellow metal gained 1% on the day, settling near the $1,660 an ounce level [see Three Years Later: Best Performing ETFs Since Markets Bottomed Out]. After back-and-forth price action throughout most of last week, equity indexes managed to end on a high note as good news from the Greek debt swap deal restored confidence in the debt burdened currency bloc. The tug of war between the bulls and bears continues on Wall Street as investors digested yet another plateful of mixed earnings results coupled with encouraging economic data. The Nasdaq remains at the front of the pack for the week, gaining 0.67% on the day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average lagged behind, clinching gains of 0.36%. Euphoria across equity markets created headwinds for the U.S. dollar for a third day in a row this week, which has helped beat down commodity prices to edge higher. Daily ETF Roundup: DBB Continues Slide On Copper Weakness, IYT Jumps On UNP Earnings

American equity markets experienced another choppy session on Thursday as France and Germany announced that a second summit would take place next week, suggesting that a resolution to the crisis would not come this weekend. Nevertheless, both the Dow and the S&P 500 managed to rise modestly on the day as the indexes gained, respectively, 0.3% and 0.5% on the session. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, however, wasn’t as fortunate as the index fell by about 0.2% to close just under the 2,600 level. Meanwhile, commodity markets continued to slide on the day as gold fell by about $25/oz. and oil slid by close to 0.2% to fall just below $86/bbl. Wall Street posted yet another up-down week of performance as domestic equity indexes fluctuated and ultimately fell victim to serious profit taking as the final trading session drew to a close. Worse-than-expected U.S. consumer confidence coupled with a decline in personal income were concerning data releases that only added to the piling uncertainty weighting down on stocks. Gold wasn’t much of a safe haven last week as the precious metal found it hard to rise back above $1,700 an ounce, and drew lower as the week went on, managing to settle just below the $1,650 mark on Friday. As the economy continues to weaken, highly cyclical stocks have been getting hammered more than most, leading the market lower over the past month. One of the most troubled in this time period has undoubtedly been the transport sector as that particular corner of the market has lost close to 1,000 basis points more than the overall market in the past three months. Yet, while stock prices have slumped, earnings have held up surprisingly well at a number of firms in the sector, namely those in the railroad segment of the broad transportation industry, suggesting that fears, and not fundamentals are causing the recent slump. Despite the choppy trading and continued uncertainty in Europe, American stock managed to finish the day higher pretty much across the board. The Dow rose by 0.4% while the broader indexes more than doubled the 30 stock index, as the S&P 500 rose by 0.9% and the Nasdaq gained 1.5% for the day. In commodity markets, most resources finished in the green as well, as gold added about 1.3% and oil surged to just below the $90/bbl. mark on a 1.9% gain. Soft commodities, on the other hand, did see broad weakness on the session as all of the grains slumped, led lower by 3% losses in the corn and wheat markets on hopes for higher supply levels.
